The answer, of course, is both. And it’s this dichotomy that makes the relationship between art and digital so fascinating. They need each other, but they also can’t stand each other. It’s a love/hate relationship that has been going on for decades and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.
So what does the future hold for these two? Will they continue to fight until one prevails? Or will they find a way to coexist peacefully? Only time will tell. But one thing is for sure – their relationship will continue to be one of the most interesting ones to watch.
There are a few key things that make traditional art unique: the mediums used, the tools used, and the artistic process itself.
All of these factors come together to create artwork that has a look and feels that is unique to traditional art. And while digital art has its own unique qualities, it will never be able to completely replicate the traditional art experience.
While there are many upsides to traditional art, there are also a few downsides to traditional art, it can require a lot of tools and space. For example, a painter might need an easel, paints, brushes, and a large space to work in. This can make traditional art difficult or impossible for some people.
Traditional art can be difficult to move around. Because it is often created on large canvases or with heavy materials, it can be hard to transport traditional artwork from one place to another.
This can be a problem for artists who want to sell their work or for those who want to display their work in different locations.
If you're an artist who paints or draws in a traditional style, you may have found it difficult to sell your work. In a world where digital art is becoming increasingly popular, it can be hard to find buyers for your traditional pieces. Here are some of the reasons why traditional art is harder to sell:
Unfortunately, there's simply less of a market for traditional artforms than there is for other types of art. This is because traditional art takes longer to create, which means that there are fewer pieces available for purchase. Additionally, traditional art often requires specialized skills and training, which further limits the pool of potential buyers. As a result, it can be difficult to find interested buyers for your traditional artwork.
Another reason why traditional art is hard to sell is because it's generally more expensive than other types of art. Traditional artwork often uses high-quality materials that can be costly to purchase. For example, if you're a painter who uses oil paints, you'll likely have to charge more for your paintings than someone who uses acrylics or watercolors. As a result, interested buyers may be deterred by the high price tag associated with traditional artwork.
In addition to being more expensive and less available, another reason why traditional art is hard to sell is because it may not be as appealing to modern buyers. This is because many people prefer contemporary or abstract artwork that they can easily incorporate into their homes or offices. Traditional artwork, on the other hand, can often look dated or out of place in modern settings. As a result, you may have a harder time finding buyers who are interested in purchasing your traditional artwork.
Finally, traditional art can be time-consuming. Because each piece is often created by hand, it can take a long time to finish a traditional artwork. This can be frustrating for artists who want to create multiple pieces or who want to sell their work quickly.
Chances are, if you've been on social media in the past few years, you've come across digital art. Whether it's a professionally done portrait of a celebrity or an amateur's sketch of their favorite TV show character, digital art is everywhere. But what makes it so popular? Let's take a look at a few reasons why digital art is taking over the traditional art world.
The first reason is that anyone can do it. All you need is a computer or tablet and some basic knowledge of how to use editing software like Photoshop, and you're good to go. And if you don't have any experience with editing software, there are plenty of tutorials available online that can help you get started. You don't need expensive supplies or years of training to create digital art.
Another reason digital art is so popular is that it can be easily shared online. With traditional art, unless you're planning on framing your work and hanging it up in your home, the only way to share it with others is to physically give them a copy or take a photo of it and hope the quality comes out okay. But with digital art, all you have to do is post it online, and anyone in the world can see it. You can also easily edit and make changes to your work without having to start from scratch every time.
Finally, digital art is popular because it's easy to make money from. If you're a traditional artist, unless you're already established, it can be very difficult to sell your work. But with digital art, there are a number of platforms (such as Etsy or Cartoonely) where you can set up a shop and sell your work with relative ease. You can also create commissioned pieces for people, custom portraits, which is something that's much harder to do with traditional art forms.
Digital art is quickly becoming the preferred type of art, due to its many advantages over traditional art forms. If you're thinking about getting into the world of digital art, there's never been a better time to start.
So, what happens when an artist wants to combine the best of both worlds? How can they take advantage of the flexibility and reach of digital art while still retaining the physicality and tangibility of traditional art? The answer is simple: by combining traditional art and digital art into one cohesive piece.
There are a few different ways that an artist can combine traditional art and digital art. One popular method is to create a digital image or animation and then print it out on canvas or another type of physical medium. This gives the artwork a traditional look and feel while still incorporating the artist's original digital file. Another way to combine traditional and digital art is to create a physical collage or sculpture using found objects, and then photograph or scan the piece and add digital elements like color correction or typography. This allows the artist to add personal touches to their work while still making it accessible to a wider audience online.
With the rise of digital art has come a new way of thinking about how artwork is created and sold. In the past, an artist would create a piece of art and then try to sell it to a collector or gallery. But now, with the vast reach of the internet, artists are selling their work directly to buyers all over the world. And in many cases, they're doing so without even creating a physical copy of their work.
This new way of selling artwork is called "print on demand." Print on demand allows an artist to sell their work as digital files that can be printed out by the buyer on whatever type of medium they choose (canvas, paper, metal, etc.). The buyer pays for the print, and the artist receives a commission for their work. This system has a number of advantages for both artists and buyers. Artists can sell their work without having to invest in materials or shipping, and buyers can choose what type of medium they want their artwork printed on. It's a win-win situation for everyone involved.
If you're an artist, print on demand is definitely something you should look into. It's a great way to reach a global audience and make some extra money from your artwork.
No matter what method you choose, combining traditional art and digital art is a great way to create unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that are sure to stand out from the crowd. So if you're looking for a new way to express yourself artistically, why not give it a try? You might be surprised at the results.

The expectations are always high and it is very easy to fall down a loophole of comparing your work to others and feeling bad about your work. Being unsure, and feeling like you do not have the skillset can be really exhausting. It happens to the best of us, so worry not, you have come to the right place. Continue reading for a step-by-step guide for how to prepare your portfolio for architecture school applications.

https://lovefunart.ca/
Step 2: Look at the school’s admissions and portfolio requirements
Start off by looking at which schools you are most interested in applying to. Once you have a short list, go on the school’s websites and look at their admissions requirements. Specifically scroll to their portfolio requirements to get an understanding of what the school is looking for. Something which is also helpful in doing your research is reaching out to someone from the faculty to get advice, attending information sessions offered by the school, and following them on their social media pages to keep up to date on the types of work current students are producing. You can never go wrong with too much research. It is better to know everything then to not know enough. Doing full research will really help you shape your portfolio, and your chances of getting accepted will also be higher.
Step 3: Gather Inspiration
The next thing you want to do is start off a pinterest board or a folder in your computer where you start to gather all types of inspirations photos of works by other artists or architects. Some great tools for gathering inspiration include pinterest, behance, issuu, and visiting websites of different architecture firms from around the world. Having some artists and architects who inspire you is also helpful because it tailors your research in a focused area. For portfolio purposes, some good inspiration to collect includes, color palettes, fonts, types of architecture projects, layout and organization of portfolio pages. You should spend a good amount of time collecting this information and developing a language for your portfolio because this is what you will be referring back to again and again as you continue to work. These inspiration folders can grow throughout the process of creating your portfolio.
Step 4: Set up an Indesign or Illustrator file
Once you have all your inspiration folders ready, and you can somewhat envision what your portfolio might look like, you can start to put together a layout of the file. Good softwares to use are Illustrator and InDesign. Illustrator is good for creating drawings and illustrations, and is also flexible in terms of moving things around the page, however InDesign is the most commonly used software for portfolio preparations because it is quicker to work with, allows you to set margins easily and is also good at reducing your overall file size. When setting up your file, you want to make sure margins align on all pages as this is probably the most important thing. When the admissions committee is scrolling through your work, the last thing they want to do is see images jumping around on all pages and having no consistency. Consistency really is key here. The next thing you want to do is have set locations for placement of images on title pages, and have a font language that you will be using throughout. This would also be the time to introduce any color to your overall portfolio template. By the end of this, your file should have everything it needs except for images and text of your actual work.
Step 5: Gather some existing Art and Architecture projects and make them better
Next, you should look back at all the work you have created in the past and collect it all in one place. Go through everything one by one and pick out your strongest pieces of work that you want to include. Once you have done that, you can then go ahead and start to edit these works to match the standard you want to achieve for your portfolio. Sometimes making entirely new drawings helps and other times, making small changes can go a long way in terms of effectively communicating your design work. When making amendments to your work, keep in mind that you want to be showing work which holds meaning and conveys your initial design intents. You can show 10 images of the same thing and have it mean nothing, but have 1 image and have it mean everything. Quality over quantity is key here.
Step 6: Create some new projects
Once you are done sorting through all your old work, take a look at everything and see if you should add more work. 99% of the time, you will want to add new exciting work into your portfolio. The teachers at Love Fun Art can help you prepare new projects that match your inspiration themes and are also good design works in general. These new projects should represent you as a designer, and communicate everything that you are passionate about.
Once you are satisfied with the amount and quality of the work produced, you should focus your attention on writing descriptions for each project. Now don't go off writing essays explaining what your project is about. It is important to keep the text descriptions short (1-2 paragraphs) so that the admissions committee actually feels comfortable reading it. If it is too long, chances are they will just skim over it, and that will have an impact on them fully understanding who you are as a designer. Keep them short and to the point. In your descriptions, mention your idea, your thought process, how you tackled any issues you encountered and what the overall exploration was.
Remember, a good portfolio tells a story about you as a designer. Your work should be presented in a manner where every page adds to the previous page. As a whole, it should dance to its own rhythm. A general understanding is to kick your portfolio off with the strongest project, and end it off with a strong project as well. The order for the projects in between is also important. You never want to have the reviewer be bored looking at your work. Your work should be engaging, and flow smoothly through the entirety of your portfolio. Overall, your work should have a balance of completed works, progress works, your thought process, and hand-on works (i.e. 3d models, sculptures, paintings etc.)
This is an important step! Double check and then triple check your work. Look for any errors, and typos, and most importantly look to make sure all margins are aligning and as you skip through pages, nothing feels out of place. It always helps to have a fresh pair of eyes look at your work. They might be able to point out something that you were not seeing. Ask a friend to proofread all your descriptions. Look to make sure all images are pasted in correctly. When you are done checking everything, check one more time before submitting.
Step 10: Hit that submit button!
Alas, the time to submit has arrived. Your anxiety rises, you start to panic a little bit, doubt kicks in. “Did I do everything correctly?”
“Did I miss something?”
“Are there any errors?”
“Is my work even good enough?”
Relax. If you follow the steps listed above, then you are in good shape. Scan everything one last time, make sure your PDF export is not too large. Look at the portfolio submission requirements for the school you are applying to, and upload your portfolio. Fill out the rest of your application, pay any processing fees, and hit that submit button. You did it. Congratulations! The only thing left to do now, is wait, stay optimistic, and hope for the best possible outcome. Whether you get accepted or not is up to the admissions committee but you should be content with the hard work you have put into your portfolio. And know that even if things do not go the way you wanted them to, it probably wasn't right for you and there is something better waiting for you.

The journey to becoming an architect is far from easy. After spending anywhere between 5-8 years in school, you then have to spend a considerable amount of time in the field to learn all the required skills. After which you can write an exam, pass that exam, and call yourself an architect. Apart from the numerous years of hard work in school and field, there is also a long list of skills you will need in order to be successful once you become an architect. Here is a list of some of the most important skills you will need in order to be successful in your career as an architect.
Design Skills
The first and most essential thing you need to develop over the years is design skills. Think of it this way, if you do not have design skills, you are not doing the future generations of inhabitants any good. You need to be able to design, and do so beautifully. Always keep one thing in mind, you are never designing for the current generation, you are always designing for the future generations, and always leaving behind things that will help ensure the survival and livability of who is to come after you. Now that we have that cleared out, you may ask, what does it even mean to have good design skills. It means first and foremost that you understand the basics of good design which includes design knowledge and considerations such as sustainability, eco-friendly, and materiality - but on the other hand you also need design skills such as knowing how to make something beautiful. You need to learn the art of bridging forms and color together in order to make beautiful masterpieces. I believe most architects are also artists, and in order to make a unique design, you have to let your creativity out with every line you put on paper.
Now this is a skill which you will learn a little bit about during your time in school, but most of your knowledge will come from your work experience in the field. Now keep in mind, building code varies from country to country and in some cases even from province to province. One example of why this might be, is weather conditions. Weather is the biggest factor which varies all around the world which means in order to accommodate for extremely cold winters or extremely hot summers, the designing of a space will be entirely different. Once you have decided where you want to be practicing as an architect, you can dive deep into all the codes for everything from doors and handles to road widening and site conditions. Knowledge and skills learned on site are also essential for success as an architect. Although our work mostly revolves around working endless hours on a computer screen, we also need to know how our drawings transition into the real world. Something to help develop this skill is to constantly be visiting the site during the construction phase of a project. Without this knowledge, you only know half of what you are doing.
The next two really important skills you need are honesty and precision. Let me elaborate. Honesty is as simple as, whatever you draw, whatever you tell the client, anything you do in your work needs to be honest work. You should never find loopholes, and never look for an easy way out when it comes to being an architect. You must hold your design values high as an architect, and you must deliver genuine, and honest work. You can never go wrong with honesty. Secondly, precision is extremely important when you are producing the work. I think all architects, at some point in their career, start to develop OCD (Obsessive compulsive disorder), where you have the constant need to make sure everything aligns on a page, and nothing is overlapping. This is where precision plays a huge role. A big part of presenting your work to your client is creating clean, harmonious design packages, that if you were to skim through it, it should feel like poetry. Every single line, color, CAD block, text you add onto the paper should be precise in every way possible. I know, I know, human error is a thing. But you can eliminate most of that out as well by always double, triple checking your work before hitting that send button. Precision really goes a long way for any designer. It not only ensures perfection, but it also lets the client have more trust in you.
During your career, you will have numerous chances where you will be working in collaboration with other designers. Some who you will really enjoy working with, and other times where you will absolutely despise your design partners. In either situation, it is really important that you have developed good critical thinking skills. This is important because good design is never produced in a linear direction. By that, I mean, design is never something which goes in one straight line, you never just start off with an idea and work on it until completion. You have to take different paths along the way, and take any chance possible to develop your design idea and strategy along the way. In order to do so, you need to be able to look at something with a critical eye and point out everything which is working great for the project and everything which is not working great for the project. But critical thinking does not just end there. When you see something which you want to change, you have to be able to provide a different design solution that would work in a more efficient way. A Lot of times people confuse being critical as someone being a jerk and only telling you things which are not working out. When in reality, criticism should always feel like a conversation between two people who constantly bounce thoughts off on one another in order to come up with a design solution.
This one is pretty obvious. As an architect, you will always be communicating with someone. It is rare that you get to hide out in a corner and be a CAD monkey. Even if you are a CAD monkey, (mind you, this is not where you should be if you want to be a successful architect), you still have to be communicating with your team members in order to make sure all tasks are being completed in a timely manner. Communication starts with your team members, and goes all the way from talking to your client, talking to other disciplines such as engineers and landscape architects, to presenting your project to the city and public for approval. And if you can not effectively communicate your design principles and ideas, your job is going to be extremely difficult. It comes down to being able to show what your ideas are in a clear manner to the client and the public, but also being able to communicate with your team to ensure successful completion, while meeting all deadlines. This is essential in order for you to become successful in your career.
This last one is a skill which in my opinion is the foundation of all other skills. You need good computer and software skills for you to be able to produce all your drawings. Some general computer skills you will need include being able to work on a screen for the majority of your time, and general knowledge about the computer’s hardware system is helpful for determining if your computer is strong enough to handle the workload it will have. Software skills vary but generally include Microsoft Office (Word, Powerpoint, Excel), Adobe Suites (Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier, Acrobat), AutoCAD, Rhino, Grasshopper, Sketchup, Bluebeam, Revit, Twinmotion, Unreal Engine, and Lumion. The list can go on based on the preferred method of working, but the ones listed here are some of the most commonly used softwares around the world.
Overall, these are some of the most important skills that you will need to develop during your learning years. It is important to keep these in mind throughout your time in school and in the field so you are ready to avail any opportunity that helps you develop these skills further. Remember, the key to all these skills is knowledge. It ties all skills together, and as an architect, you have to have the desire to be constantly learning and developing your skills through your career. Knowledge is something which is infinite. One man can not know everything there is to possibly know. You will always be learning even after 30 years of experience, because those that come after you will bring new knowledge and skills to the field. In general, every few years bring new changes to the building code. The more we continue to develop designing buildings, the more skills there will be to learn. With every new set of knowledge, you will design even better. And if this is a quality you have within you, not only will you be on the correct path towards becoming a good designer, but you will also be successful in your career as an architect.
To get a head start on learning some of these skills, check out some of the courses offered at Love Fun Art. We offer all types of art and architecture courses that are fun and easy going to accommodate your schedule. Our teachers are highly qualified with years of experience, and we are always looking for new enthusiastic students to join our classes. See the link below for more details: https://lovefunart.ca/
]]>Make it a habit to always be developing new technical and drawing skills
Being an architect in the professional world is very different from being an architect in the academic world. In the professional world, your imagination is limited with a lot of practicalities of design such as a long list of city guidelines that you have to follow in order to make a building. In the academic world, there are no limits to your imagination. You are free to explore any area of design with no rules that you have to follow, and you can be super creative in terms of representing your ideas as well. A big part of being an architect is to be able to communicate your ideas visually to a client or your professor. This skill set is something which is learned, which is why it is important to make sure you are always learning new skills that will help you develop a visual language. Some good 3D Modelling softwares to learn include Rhino, and Sketch-Up. Some good softwares for post production and line work editing include Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. And finally, some of the greatest softwares out there for rendering and making videos of your designed spaces are Twin motion and Unreal Engine. Learning to work with the right softwares can go a long way and these are skills that you can use in any profession down the line as well.
If you are someone who is not used to keeping a planner, this is the time to develop the habit of keeping one because it will make your life a million times easier. Keeping track of deadlines is easy, but keeping track of the amount of tasks you have to do in order to successfully meet that deadline is where it gets really hard to follow up with everything. Having a design deadline means you have to make a set of drawings - and this set can include plans, sections, elevations, site plans, axonometric, renderings, and 3D models. Writing everything that needs to be prepared before the deadline, and allotting one task per day or more makes it so much easier to ensure you are always meeting deadlines and never rushing to get things done last minute. The key to success here is to spread apart the work over the few weeks you have, to work in segments and never leave everything for the last two days before a design review. In fact the last two days should be your most stress free days and should give you enough time to prepare what you want to say when you present your work. Keeping a planner is highly recommended even for keeping track of other things outside of school, like making sure you are doing your groceries on time, making time for friends and family, and most importantly allotting time out for personal things like self care.
When you are in the midst of it all, and deadlines from all your classes are weighing on, it is very easy to tell yourself, “I’ll just stay awake all night to get this done.” Never, I repeat, never ever get in the habit of doing this. Take it from someone who has attended architecture school for 7 years, it is never worth it to pull an all nighter. Working all night means being anxious and stressed to get work done, drowning in coffee trying to force yourself to stay awake, and feeling really tired the next morning when you are giving your presentation. Studies have shown that we are least productive when we work at night and much more productive when we work in the day hours. I always found waking up early to do some work much more productive than staying up late working. Ask yourself a simple question, what is the point of forcing yourself to stay awake, produce mediocre work because your productivity levels are low, not being able to think clearly on your ideas, and not feeling energetic enough during your presentation? Not to forget, your mental health is way more important that that deadline that is stressing you out. Keep it simple, be productive during that day, and use that planner to help you.
I repeat. Never make last minute changes to your work and own what you put on your drawings. First of all, you should be using your planner to make sure you are not working right up until the deadline. But if you are, do not make last minute changes because your ideas are not going to be fully reformed and if someone questions why you did something, you will not be able to answer them properly. If there is something you end up not liking and want to change, bring it up during conversation when you are presenting and ask the reviewers what they think and if they can suggest something that might make it better. They will definitely help you see a different side to your design and then you can take those comments and make the changes and be prepared for the next review. Owning what you put on the paper is also important because you should be able to defend your work if you ever need to. You don't ever want to be in a situation where someone critiques your work and you are not able to own up to what you made. Remember, a good review should not feel like instructions being thrown at you but instead should feel like a conversation.
Reviews can go in one of 3 directions. They can be filled with compliments about how amazing your work is, or they can be filled with remarks about everything wrong that you did, or they can be a balance of comments that point out the goods and bad in your project followed up by advice to help you improve. The bad news is, there is no way of predicting what type of review you are about to have - it all depends on the panel who is attending. The good news is, you can direct the conversation and try to get some productive comments out of the reviewers. Regardless of how good or bad your review goes, never think too hard about what they said, except productive comments that help you improve your project moving forward.
Stemming off of the importance of mental health, something that is super helpful is finding a spot on campus or near campus where you can go to simply unwind from all your stresses. It can be your place where you go to think about anything that might be stressing you out. Or your place where you go to think about great ideas, and reflect on life. Remember, as important as it is to understand and blend into the lifestyle of an architecture student, it is equally as important to have your life outside of school as well. You can also use this spot to write in your journal, listen to music, or draw in your sketchbook.
Working in a studio is amazing. You see all the creative things your classmates are working on and be inspired by them, you can ask for help with anything you are stuck on, and you have your friends with you at all times working and eating together. However, this can get overwhelming sometimes especially when there is a deadline coming up and others are ahead of you and you're feeling like you are starting to fall behind. It can definitely get a little overwhelming sometimes. In moments like these, it is very important to have a favourite spot on campus, like a cozy library or a cafe with great coffee, where you can go and just be able to work alone. This allows you to focus on only your work and what is in front of you. This is also helpful if you feel like you are getting distracted in the studio and not being productive enough.
Giving importance to certain tasks over others is something which really helps in order to survive architecture school. Sometimes school is a priority, but other times it is important to recognize that your personal life is also a priority. Having a balance of the two and focusing on things that are important can lead to overall productivity in your career.
Even if you have friends outside of your class, make friends with people in your class. These are the people who will lift you up when you are down, be there for you when you need help with something, and will also be helping you out with your ideas. You will be spending the majority of your time with your classmates, so it is a good idea to be friends with them. Trust me, it will make your time in architecture school so much more fun and memorable.
Lastly, in order to survive architecture school, you must always think about the bigger picture when it comes to design. Stick to the design guidelines of the assignment, but also ask yourself what this project means in the greater realm of things. Which communities will this design be affecting? Who would be occupying the space you are designing? Who will benefit from this space? Are you exploring new design methods? And most importantly, is your design working to make our living environment a better place to live in? Having answers to questions like these and more always allows for more meaningful conversations around design, and overall enhances your knowledge as an architect in training.
Whether coming to architecture school was a good or bad decision for you is something only time will tell. Some love it and while others never want to think about architecture once they graduate. But while you are in school, if you keep these 10 tips in mind, and practice them, I can confidently say that your time in school will be a hell of a lot smoother. Good luck on your journey to becoming an architect!

I’m in LOVE with this school! Hands down the best university in the country! Education quality is excellent, the professors are excellent, the student experience is excellent, and the location is excellent. Ryerson is the heartbeat of Toronto. The level of knowledge you come out with is outstanding compared to counterparts from other institutions. Since graduating I was able to accomplish far more in my career than I ever expected in a short period of time. My program coordinator was seriously a God send and my professors were the most amazing people. They’re definitely very critical with their grading, but as long as you’re a diligent and passionate student you’ll do very well. This school really cares about their students and I can’t say enough about them. I’m always so proud to say that I’m Ryerson alumni!!!____Nakasha Ogbonna

I moved to Toronto to take the Fashion Marketing program and coming here is one of the best decisions I've ever made. I love the sizes of classes and how you really get to know your instructors. I was nervous for certain courses like buying because math was never my strongest subject, but I excelled in the program because of my instructors. Every course touches on different careers of the industry. I loved being able to succeed in a program that brought out my strengths and passion.___Luna Lindsay

]]>Interior design is a fascinating field on its own. It is described as the art and science of enhancing the interior of a building so as to achieve a much healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for the people using the space. In other words, interior design is very multifaceted as it deals with various fields, particularly aesthetics, science, and business, all at the same time. And with this, it is safe to say that interior design is a unique form of art. And it is no wonder that it’s becoming such a flourishing industry as of now.

First semester at this college was amazing, onto my second now. I met great people, great teachers (with the exception of one) and had a great time. If you want to succeed they have the tools and people to get you there. LiNX, their on campus pub is fantastic and their new building looks great. The entire campus feels more like a university rather than a college (maybe because its connected to Guelph-Humber). If you have a program you're interested in and Humber College offers it you definitely should consider Humber College over others. Somewhat related, I wouldn't eat on campus everyday. It's expensive and you'd burn through a LOT of money, fast. Also, the required readings of a few of my courses were custom editions for Humber, meaning I got shafted in terms of buying the textbook from other sources. That doesn't really detract from the school itself, however.___Kenny Vo

OCAD takes creativity seriously, always has, always will – and as an alumna it trained me well for all things in life. It was rigorous training, don't expect to be flaky in any way, you would be called out for it. In a world there's everything DIY, and usually it's free to Do-it-Yourself. Everything except creative talent. Yes you can be born with a natural inclination to be creative, yet it has to be nurtured to excel in all ways. The flow, the energy, the discovery of re-imagining in this right side of the brain process contributes to growth in all ways, whether it's business graphics and design or EQ and spiritual or mental personal evolution. Thanks OCAD for being a pillar in the Canadian quest for creative excellence.____Karen Hogg

“Was an excellent experience. Instructor went above and beyond what he was required to do. He came in on the weekend before the practical test just to do a review for those of us who had questions . Even stayed late after class to make sure everyone understood the material and had it down. I've recommended this course to everyone I know. When it's time to renew my course I'll definitely be going back to MetroSafety. Great instructors, very friendly and super super patient.” ---Aj K.
“I am writing this review as a visitor, not as anyone who is closely connected with the institution. What I like about Emily Carr is its generally upbeat aura of experimental investigation of art and other aesthetic issues. It's a gem on centrally located Granville Island, with terrific views of downtown Vancouver and the mountains to the north. Its quasi-isolation gives it the distinct sense of an enclave, in this case one that can be visited for a satisfying dose of aesthetic elevation. I love places like this, and this one I will never forget because it bolstered my belief that art and design make a great city (like Vancouver) even greater. I'm going to have to find a way to get a teaching or exhibiting artist fellowship to Emily Carr.” ---Noe B.

I am a student here and my experience has been noting but positive! There is so much opportunity and support, and there is a definite sense of community. The course work is hard as all get out, but a school doesn't become one off the top art schools in the nation for being easy. I am honored to call MICA my school and my home.____Charlie Caraher
MICA is an fantastic place to be at! One of the nation's top art schools and it is home to many majors that any artist or designer would love. The courses are hardcore and very informative and the professors and absolutely amazing! I am proud to call mica my home!____Harry Trinh
Forever grateful having the opportunity to live and learn with a thriving artist community for what now feels like a short period of time. I regularly wish I could "re-do art school", and miss the unique neighborhoods that MICA has developed. There is truly no place like it.____Camellia Termini

This Uni has a lot to offer like good library, excellent education and especially a great environment. They have got many different societies. A good club for gigs and wont forget Stylus, pulse and mine clubs.____Vivek
I particularly like the fact that ,at least when I was there, the lecturers were academics and gentlemen rather than businessmen. I know that sounds old fashioned, but even then other universities had decided to go full hog and chase the cash. Whereas at Leeds, the Dean of Biological Sciences, would stop mid stride if he was about to pass you on campus and ask you how you were. And was everything going alright. I loved my department. It's building now been given to the Arts Dept. Lucky devils. :-) Don't think my subject exists anymore.____DDD OB
I studied at the University of Leeds as an exchange student from the USA and was so inspired by my time there that I transferred to study at Leeds full-time. As a student in the School of Chemistry, the facilities, faculty, and curriculum I have access to are wonderful, and I have received an unprecedented level of support from my professors when expressing confusion about a subject or a desire to meet with them outside of lectures. The city of Leeds is ideal for students -- small enough to be easily accessible, and large enough to contain everything you could possibly need. Downtown offers a great assortment of pubs, bars, shops, events, and restaurants; and the universities offer an entirely separate set of activities that are equally as interesting and enjoyable. Thanks to the Leeds Student Union, student life at Leeds is packed with societies, events, and social opportunities. The people I have met at Leeds have all been friendly, compelling, active, and welcoming. I can't recommend the University of Leeds highly enough.____David

Not gonna lie to you, RISD is a really expensive place to pursue an education, but it pays off. You'll meet a lot of people who are more talented than you are and you can't help but learn from them, befriend them, and grow a network of lifelong friends and connections. The professors are usually great, often inspiring, and always knowledgeable. If you're going here, art and design should absolutely be your emphasis, but you'll also have ample opportunity to round out your education with RISD liberal arts and a massive selection of Brown classes. It's also worth noting that the RISD name has a lot of pull in the job market, and alumni connections are considerable. Opportunities for internships and full time work are everywhere, particularly for design majors. I can't personally speak to RISD's fine arts connections, but I believe they are similarly strong.____Timothy P
A wonderful art school for people looking to study art, but for yelpers there is a wonderful art museum open to the public. In addition, if you are in the area, some of their dining hall cafes are open to the public and trust me their food is not your average dining hall food its actually a high quality a food and not all that expensive.____Annamarie T
Okay, so this review could be miles long, but I will sum it up as briefly as possible: 1. The best art school in the country. Because of its exemplary museum, setting, faculty, students, programmes and culture. It isn't difficult to be amazed at the work of the people associated with RISD. 2. You gotta be ready for it to really get the most out of it. There are rules and there are expectations, but you can and should do your own thing while learning wherever you can, and you will be rewarded for it, even if it goes against the rules. 3. The resources are there, and are around you even if you can't find them at first, and sometimes you gotta bring a serious grease gun to get the gears moving. The freedom that this school provides also requires maturity to accept.____Jeffrey L

I went to university here, so naturally I'm biased. Although the new student union is a total eyesore, there are other parts of the campus (Arkwright, Bonington) that are beautiful and have real character. Many of the student halls here would benefit from extensive work (think expensive, institutional, prison-like settings) but regardless, I enjoyed my time here and wouldn't change anything – even the bad parts.____Sophie Draper
I have studied before in some old well-known universities in UK.. when i was accepted for my phd in NTU i was a bit disappointed as it is not a well-known or high-ranked one like mine before. However, i was veeery impressed later with the academic atmosphere, the high standard of the academic staff, the up-to-date electronic services in the library (boots library), the modern buildings, the activities.. the whole atmosphere motivates you to participate in conferences, to attend seminars and to publish in journals. i love it and highly recommend it.____Cloud S

Berly-Since I didn’t have any experience in art, I started to prepare my portfolio for OCAD one year before my application. Hence, I would be in front of my computer screen all day to sketch. Until two month before the application deadline, my friend asked me “why haven’t you started to prepare your portfolio? How come you are still sketching?”. I realized that I needed to show my strengths and skills in my portfolio, and I still had a lot to prepare. Then my friend introduced me to LoveFunArt, they analysed what I was missing, and managed a schedule. I did some industrial designs, some illustrations, and some weaving projects. I successfully got an offer from OCAD in this short amount of time. I am truly grateful for that! This year, will be my third year, and it is quite stressful at OCAD.
I loved studying here. It is hard, really hard, tho x). You won't sleep and you will barely have any free time, but it is worth it. There are amazing professionals teaching here and they will help you build up your future as an artist. But to get the best out of your time here, you have to be involved, talk to your instructors about your interests, and be eager to learn.____Nikole McGregor
OCAD is a great place to study. Many of my closest friends and colleagues are fellow alumni. Every university has growing pains and some issues with their facilities. Nonetheless, it is still the best art and design school in the country and we should all be proud of our alma mater and the unparalleled quality of its instructors. As with any school, experiences from people like "forti L" are expected. At ECU, it's certainly not the norm, but if you're an unmotivated write off, you're going to lose out on experiences. There's very little hand holding at Emily Carr University. There are many good teachers, a few amazing ones, and a few terrible ones, just like any other school. Clear and regular communication is necessary with teachers to ensure you maximize what you get out of your education. Many people who've complained about the school are ones who regularly sit in the class and do so quietly, while rarely or never speaking up and interacting in the discussions. It's no surprise they end up feeling ripped off; They wasted their best chance at a quality education by sitting on the side lines and watching life go by. For those looking to go into technology-heavy areas of art/design, be wary about your expectations. They are not bleeding edge here, and those that make the most of their education here see that the analog parallels are far more beneficial than learning strictly one area/medium. This school has a great balance between course costs and quality of education. It's one of the world's best schools, but not THE best, and it's worlds above the worst of the lot.____David Metcalfe

I will give an idea of few things for international students. I was one among them last year. I wish I had known. To get your upass, student is when you come in, go to the university center second floor above the food court. Then to eat something, food courts are there at, sports complex, university center and residence complex. Apart from this there is gym at the sports complex, you need an ID card and proper gym clothes to access. Here you have a changing room too. Indian students who study here are mostly electrical or mechanical students. So for them, McKenzie is where the elec subjects are there. Apart from this, all you have to know is bus number 7,101,111,4 comes here to the bus stop outside the minto complex. There is facility of train 🚊 too opposite to bus stop. You will learn after you go to college and come back twice or thrice.____Srinidhi Jony

As we know, UCL is of course one of the top 10 universities over the world. The academic power and capability are actually beyond the general public's expectations. For example, in the field of brain sciences and neurosciences which have been becoming more important as the future tech., UCL is placed 2nd just behind Harvard University in the world. Other than that, the research capabilities of UCL in education and architecture are the world top. I was once a visiting PhD student of UCL (I am currently working in MIT), and I was so satisfied with the life in UCL. Amazing place. I hope to study here one day whether it be in 3 years or 20 years time. This place is part of British and world history through and through. Even for a visit, I would recommend due to the amazing scenery and historic feel of the city. It's not like you'll ever get bored however, as the city is packed with shops, quite literally having every brand you could think of. Also, if you're a fan of Chinese cuisine, you will love it here, with the outskirts packed with Chinese takeaways.____Benas J

One of the best decisions I have possibly ever made. For a city girl like me, the country tranquility and studious atmosphere was exactly what I needed to stop myself from being distracted by the hustle and bustle of city life.
There are rules and their are expectations, but you can and should do your own thing while learning whereever you can, and you will be rewarded for it, even if it goes against the rules. 3. The resources are there, and are around you even if you can't find them at first, and sometimes you gotta bring a serious grease gun to get the gears moving. The freedom that this school provides also requires maturity to accept.____Jeffrey L
]]>Kelvin Zhang was a student at Love Fun Art, who is currently enrolled in second year of architecture at University College London, which is the best architecture school in the world. He visited Love Fun Art, and shared with teachers and students one of his portfolio project in first year and his experiences at school. Moreover, he gave some advice for Love Fun Art students, who are preparing for portfolio.
Note: Love Fun Art will be representing the staffs and students in the interview section
Preparation of Portfolio for Architecture Experiences
During grade 11, he was inspired by an architect from a school guest talk. Since then, he grew interested in architecture. Then started to take classes that are related to architecture and practiced in his own time. Although he was skilled in art, yet he did not know how to build a professional portfolio. However, he took the portfolio preparation class at Love Fun Art, and also learned more techniques in drawing. Unexpectedly, he did not just build his portfolio, but also developed researching and planning idea skills. “I got a lot of help from you (Love Fun Art) ” he said.
by Kevin Zhang
Love Fun Art: How did you feel when you got the offer from University College London?
Kelvin: I was indeed happy that my hard work got a great result. Even though my friend who applied with me did not get it. I shared this great news with my family and friends right away.
Love Fun Art: Before getting the offer, did you have the thought of not getting in?
Kelvin: Of course, but I would try to not think negatively, and kept working hard instead.
Love Fun Art: Have you ever feel tired while preparing your portfolio? How did you manage to keep on working?
Kelvin: As thought it was stressful and tiring, but architecture was my interest, it was my dream to get in to University College London, and that is my motivation.
First Year of Architecture at University College London
He shared one of his best projects that he did in first year. It was about a design of architecture of a tattoo shop. He presented us with his research and inspiration, from a simple poll to marine style. This skill was developed from Love Fun Art.
by Kevin Zhang
Love Fun Art: Your researching method is similar to what we did while building your portfolio, but more detailed. Was this habit from then?
Kelvin: Yes it was. I found this method truly helpful, because I have enough research to support my idea. Hence, my professor will let me do what I want. Unlike other students, they had a good idea but not enough reasons and research to support it. Indeed, the professor did not approve and suggested them to do something that they were not interested in.
Love Fun Art: This is a lot of work for one project. I was wondering if you ever got stuck and did not have any imagination, or lost in the research? How do you overcome that moment?
Kelvin: I do have moments when I do not have any imagination, and I just kept thinking and did more research until I found my answer. Also, I realized that chatting with friends and classmates from my program really helped a lot, because they can inspire me and gave the answer while chatting.
by Kevin Zhang
Love Fun Art: What is the most important thing to have for students who wants to apply for architecture at University College London?
Kelvin: Drawing skills, you really need a strong skill in drawing to design the architecture, and a unique style. My school has a lot of weird people, but their uniqueness made them stand out from the other.
Love Fun Art: Did you have any breakthrough during your first year?
Kelvin: At the first semester I was not that motivated. Around Christmas, my professor told me that I was falling the course, and once I fail I would be kicked out of school. Therefore, I started to work hard, I would go to school from 8 am to 10pm, which is when the school closed. I would work even during long weekends and events. Then I passed.
Love Fun Art: Do you think you learned a lot from this year?
Kelvin: Yes. But I think I could have done better. I regret that I did not work hard enough in my first semester.
Love Fun Art: What would you suggest for the students who are currently preparing their portfolio?
Kelvin: Keep practicing, do a lot of research, and try to learn as much technique as you can. If you find the process boring, then you can find a method to make it fun. For instance, I went on a trip to Japan with my friend, who is in the same program as me, and we sketched all the architectures that we found it interesting. This is way, it was less stressful and repeating. It can also be an excuse to travel!
by Kelvin Zhang
Love Fun Art: What is your plan for your second year?
Kelvin: I will definitely work harder. After seeing all of my finished work, I realized how much I am capable of, and I felt accomplished and closer to my dream.
Thanks to Kelvin Zhang for this interview!

Love this university. It has such a beautiful campus. Many of the professors are fantastic. Wish there was a few more resources offered to the Arts as the focus has been on Engineering. There are two gyms (one of which is used for convocation) that include a swimming pool and skating rink, two big libraries, many parking lots, at least 5 Tim Hortons', and countless geese. There is always something going on here and the atmosphere is great for learning and innovation. Often see the president walking through campus and there are always new buildings or other additions popping up throughout campus as it eternally seems to expand! Lots of places to park but it can get quite busy if there are many events going on. Gets a little quieter during the summer as less students are enrolled for the spring term. Many residence options for first years, upper years, grad students, and even families. Though it is a large campus everything is in walking distance and it is like its own little village.____Marta Borowska

The Harvard of Canada! UofT began in 1828, and consists of 4 old campuses & 3 new campuses, 7 universities that merged together over a period of 189 years! The older campuses are jaw dropping, with dining halls that resemble Harry Potter's, with long stone arch hallways, and gothic architecture everywhere. Incredible!!!! Trinity campus has a weekly Wednesday high top dinner where students and professors wear black cloaks, a tradition that had been running for over 100 years! How cool is that? Margaret Atwood who wrote the popular Handmaids Tale, attended Victoria college at UofT, so did Lester B Pearson (Canadian Prime Minister), Lorne Michaels (Saturday Night Live) and Donald Sutherland. UofT in center city Toronto is one of 3 campuses, the other two are in Mississauga and Scarborough.____Patricia H

Ryerson University is without a doubt of the best universities from Toronto if not #1. I am not a student (yet, I hope I get accepted in the next few weeks) from this University, but I´ve visited its campus and facilities. The staff from the University is exceptionally well trained to treat guests. The tours around campus are usually carried out by 3rd or 4th year students. Even so, they are so well prepared to show every detail of the university around. Besides of their training, the staff is enormously kind. One of the professors from the Image Arts Building took part of his personal time to show me around the place. I have to say, the Image Arts Building took my breath. The facility is already quite a sight from outside. Within, it´s much larger than expected. Not to mention that it is incredibly well equipped! It has everything required to offer the best for Film and Photography students. The Media and Engineering facilities I visited also seemed very well equipped. Ryerson is best known from its incredible sport varsity teams, the Ryerson Rams. The University offers these athletes the highest quality of facilities and coaching for them to prepare. I personally visited the Mattamy Athletic Centre which has volleyball and basketball courts and an Ice rink!!! It was really mind blowing.____Dani Sadun

Comments are right about it being hard to get info/assistance from office staff, especially the bursars office. However, the professors are great and are still active in the fashion industry. On top of that, the health services are AMAZING and offer free acupuncture and counseling (even if you aren’t on student insurance). School clubs usually host fun events, like the Drag Show and movie nights, or offer freebies, like massages and henna tattoos during wellness week. The library also has some great services like a magazine archive, fun events, and a VR lab.

I received my MFA from Pratt. Upon starting got a scholarship my first of the two years then found out it was only for that one year. I almost transferred to Hunters MFA program because of this. Reviews of Ryerson University:
I’m always so proud to say that I’m Ryerson alumni!!!____Nakasha Ogbonna
is always common in all universities, but the environment is entertaining, relaxing, and chilling. It can keep you happy 24/7, have all the luxury you need next to Dundas-Square, and never miss an exciting event near downtown, such as, pride parade, new years event, concerts, etc.____Faizyungsavv
I studied film and photography at Ryerson over 30 years ago and psychology later. While it's a big institution and I sometimes felt insignificant when dealing with administration, I have met many great people, both professors and fellow students. Many of these people I remain friends with to this day. I'm taking a course on the Psychology of Personality in the spring as part of my commitment to lifelong learning and am looking forward to it. Great School!____Peter MacNeil

Description of Animation:
Since image has a big impact in our society, it is like a language that communicates with the audience. With the advance of technology, we now bring image in motion, and also create a three-dimensional space. This type of work called animation, and there are in fact many kinds of animation. We usually see animation in movies, commercials, cartoon, and teaching materials...etc. Indeed, there are plenty of jobs related to animation.
However, if you love to create storyboard and creating your own characters...etc, animation would be a perfect course for you. In this article, I listed some of the top schools in Ontario that have a strong animation major, and the portfolio requirements that you need to prepare for the application for each school.

There are amazing professionals teaching here and they will help you build up your future as an artist. Nonetheless, it is still the best art and design school in the country and we should all be proud of our alma mater and the unparalleled quality of its instructors. I recommend Max the Mutt as your choice for a serious art education. I’ve had the great pleasure to be a guest teacher at Max the Mutt. The faculty has extensive knowledge and experience in the arts industry. It is a place full of anticipation, one filled with prospects. In my short time to getting to know the students, I see so much potential in their vision. I believe that under the guidance at Max the Mutt, the students can find their true passion in their art. Nowadays, images are a big part of our society. People often use images as a language to communicate with others. An illustration is like an art that supports or visual explanation of a text, concept or process. We often see illustration in books, posters, animations, films, magazines and flyers...etc.
If you are someone who has a passion for illustrating, here are some schools in Ontario that have strong skills in illustration program that you might be interested in. I had a great experience at Love Fun Art! During grade 12, while I was preparing my portfolio, I did not know what to do, and how to start? Even though I have a strong skill in the art, but preparing a portfolio was another challenge. After researching online I found Love Fun Art, that offered “portfolio preparation class”. The instructors gave me many pieces of advice because they had strong knowledge of the requirements for each school. I would even travel far to attend that class, even during winter. Also, I drew many scenes of room, kitchen and classroom…etc. Places that I will be everyday life but never realize the number of details in it. This helped me to practice in scene drawing skill. It brought more details and improved the atmosphere and mood in my work. However, this helped me a lot in my art practice. At the end I made it into Sheridan College, I can’t be more thankful!

I realized that I was into illustration half of a year before the portfolio submission deadline. Since I had no experience in art, I was extremely nervous that I won’t have enough time to learn and making my portfolio. Luckily, I found Love Fun Art and decided to give a shot. I was learning and preparing my portfolio at the same time. I took four beginner classes before preparing my portfolio, which was Logical Sketch, Creative Watercolor, Sketch Lab and Freestyle painting.
During the preparation of my portfolio, the teacher would instruct while helping me with the work based on my portfolio program. Each class were detailed, and the teachers were incredibly helpful. After a year I couldn’t believe what I was capable of. The most exciting part was I got an offer from OCAD U illustration program! I’m currently at my second-year illustration program, and I am grateful that I learned so much at Love Fun Art because I was less stressful in school.

Long story short, it seems like graphic design has conquered the world. But what exactly is graphic design? And what are its different types?
A simple way of describing graphic design is that is the art and craft of creating visual content to communicate messages. A more technical way of describing it is that it is the process of visual communication and problem-solving that is achieved through the use of typography, photography, and illustration.
Whichever definition you prefer, all graphic designers have one primary task: they create and combine symbols, images, and text to form visual representations of ideas and messages. The visual representations can be physical, digital, or anywhere in between. For this task, they use typography, visual arts, and page layout techniques to create visual compositions that actually optimize the user experience.
With all of that said, it is no wonder why in addition to being considered as an art form, graphic design is also considered as a subset of visual communication and communication design.
Generally speaking, graphic design can be applied to a multitude of situations. To begin with, it can be applied to everything visual: from road signs to technical schematics, from interoffice memorandums to reference materials. Additionally, it can also be applied in decoration, scenery, visual storytelling. Basically, graphic design is versatile — it can be applied literally on everything.
As of right now, graphic design is widely used in the world of business and marketing. This is because graphic design helps businesses in promoting their products and implementing their brand identity.
To help you see just how useful and applicable graphic design is, here are the various types of graphic design that are the most commonly known.
In the world of business, every entrepreneur knows that it is highly important to be unique. After all, there are literally millions of businesses all over the world, so standing out is incredibly daunting. This is where a type of graphic design, by the name of corporate design, swoops into the rescue — because the corporate design will help you achieve brand recognition.
Corporate design is a broad term that is used to cover two main elements: design (the logo, colours, typography) and strategy (branding). To expand on these elements further, let’s discuss them one by one.
Publication design is the process of putting together the images and text to support the content visually. With this kind of graphic design, there are a few things that a designer should take into consideration: where the design will be published and which format is accepted by the publisher.
There are a lot of publication products out there that make use of publication graphic design. Some of these are as follows:
With this kind of graphic design, the designer should be well-acquainted with the traditions and practices of the publisher they will be working for. After all, each type of publication has a different purpose, so each of them will require a different design. Publication designers actually have the tendency to do freelancing work as there are various platforms in the publishing industry. Some of the common platforms include agencies, book publishing companies, magazine publishing companies, and many more.
At first glance, you might think that this kind of graphic design has anything to do with Mother Earth or saving the planet. In reality, that isn’t actually the case. In reality, environmental graphic design, also known as experimental graphic design, is all about communicating a story by combining various elements like colour, material, pattern, etc., with the architectural features of the brand. In other words, this graphic design aims to connect the people to places and make their experience unforgettable, informative, and easier to navigate.
Packaging doesn’t just mean simply packaging — it doesn’t mean a wrapper to protect the product. Instead, packaging graphic design aims to make the packaging of the product attractive for the consumer as well as to communicate a brand story. Essentially, a good packaging designer should know how to develop the shape, graphics, and style on a package that will undoubtedly grab the consumer’s attention.
Websites are helpful in driving a company’s business forward. And that is exactly the reason why graphic design should be implemented on them. A good website design can help any business in attracting potential customers and increase sales. And with that, a graphic designer will then help your company build a user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing website that is sure going to arouse the curiosity in the customers.
Simply put, advertising design is all about the creation and organization of the visual artwork that will be used in the advertisements for product and services. In other words, advertising graphic design is all about persuasion.
That is why those graphic designers who specialize in this particular type of graphic design do not just focus on creating a superb design. They also have to know how to sell a product and capture consumers’ mind. And since advertising is a competitive industry, advertising graphic designers have to exert a lot of effort to stand out.
There is a wildly popular saying that goes “don’t judge a book by its cover.” And though this saying means well, it doesn’t mean it’s entirely true. In fact, the primary reason why that saying exists in the first place is that people do judge a book by its cover. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. After all, book covers are a marketing tool — some people will literally buy books just because they look pretty. That said, it makes sense that publishers would make sure that their book covers are as aesthetically pleasing and attractive as possible.
That is the purpose of a book cover designer: to create a book cover that communicates the story of the book and the message through multiple colours, fonts, images, symbols, and the like. A book cover designer should also understand the current trends so that they will know what makes a marketable cover.
Brochures are an incredibly important marketing tool. They help provide information about the products and services of any company as well as drive people to their business. And for that, it is crucial for brochures to have a great design. Unappealing brochure design can fail to create the first impression, but if it is professionally designed, then it can have a desirable impact on the target audience.
Kind of similar to the logo, label design is a visual that differentiates your product from your competitors in the crowd. A label generally holds information such as its maker, manufacturing, expiry date, ingredients, warnings, and many more. Because of that, a label is considered to be helpful in convincing the customer to make a buying decision.
As the name suggests, 3D graphic design is the art of creating a design on the X-Y-Z scale (width, height, and depth) which can be rotated and viewed from all angles in real-time. This is actually a type of graphic design that is gaining a lot of traction these days. That is because companies would want to convey their message in the simplest form for their more complex and technical topics. The popularity of 3D graphic design can also be attributed to the rapid growth of a visual industry.
Almost everyone all over the world spends a ton of hours per day on their mobile devices. And the majority of that time is spent on apps, thus making the mobile industry a fast-growing one.
Because of the growth of the mobile industry, there is also a rise of mobile app designers. With a great mobile app design, the app will not only look beautiful but it will also build a relationship between the app and the user. In order for mobile apps to remain marketable, professional mobile app designers should also be aware of the latest trends.
Something that not a lot of entrepreneurs realize is that they don’t always have to focus on expensive marketing efforts like TV commercials, newspaper ads, and the like. Sometimes, the simple yet direct marketing efforts can also be just as helpful. And one simple marketing effort is a printed T-shirt.
Custom T-shirts can help companies build their brand identity. This is because they carry the brand message in a more casual and friendly way, thus attracting the attention among the masses.
Another great way to popularize any business is through great stationery. Having an aesthetically pleasing stationery design — such as letterheads, business cards, folders, envelopes, and the like — is a great way of showing your professionalism and of making an impression on your clients.
Motion graphic is a kind of animation with a text as an important component. It is a way to communicate with audiences with music and compelling content. With that, motion graphic design has become one of the most popular styles among marketers. Some of the most common examples of this kind of design are videos, animated text, video games, and presentations.
Vehicle Wrap Graphic Design, also known as vehicle advertising, is literally just graphic design plastered all over a vehicle. Out of all the popular forms of advertising (TV commercials, billboards, etc.), vehicle wrap design is actually one of the most cost-effective and economical forms of outdoor advertising.
While vehicle wrap design is an incredibly useful marketing tool, it should be noted that it is important to design it right. The designer should be aware of the proper use of colours as well as the logo design, images, and photographs.
Graphic design has become one of the fast-growing fields of design. You can literally see traces of graphic design everywhere we look nowadays, especially that this is widely used in business and marketing. From websites to advertisements to infographics to T-shirts and even vehicles — graphic design is everywhere. Because of the rapid growth of this form of design, it is then no wonder that over time, it has developed various types. And in addition to that, it should also be not a surprise anymore if the rise of graphic design continues to skyrocket in the near future.

]]>You’re probably wondering right now: there are literally a lot of art supplies out there. How will you know which ones are essential for you, especially if you’re just a beginner? To help you narrow down, here are the top 10 essential art supplies that you need as an artist.
A lot of people like to overlook pencils because, for them, pencils are literally the most basic art tool in the world. And while that is technically true, it doesn’t mean that pencils are completely useless. In fact, it’s actually the opposite. Pencils are the most versatile out of all the art supplies. Not only are they useful in sketching, but they can also be helpful in other art forms such as painting, interior design, and dressmaking.
Plus, pencils come in a lot of types — from the traditional wooden to mechanical, to coloured pencils, to charcoal, and many more. Long story short, pencils are an all-around art supply, so they’re incredibly handy to have.
This one is a no-brainer. If you’re going to keep pencils in your workspace, then it just makes sense that you’re also going to have erasers. After all, erasers are the ones that will get rid of the mistake that you’ve made while using a pencil. So, if you’re going to be primarily using pencils — or even if you’re not — it’s a good idea to have erasers nearby.
Pencils may be the most versatile art tool, but that still doesn’t change the fact that not everyone prefers them. Some artists would actually prefer using pens in their artistic endeavours. If that’s the case, then you better have pens in your art space. There are literally quite a lot of brands to choose from, so you will be able to find the ones that work the best for you.
Another highly essential art supply that every artist should have is a sketchbook. After all, you’d need something to sketch or draw your art on, and though typical papers work, they’re not really the most ideal for artistic purposes. For one, they’re easy to lose, and for another, sometimes their quality is not suited for art.
That is why, as an artist, you would need a sketchbook. With a sketchbook, all your papers are in one place, so you won’t lose your prized artworks. Plus, the papers in a sketchbook are designed primarily for artistic purposes. Long story short, as an artist, you need to have a sketchbook ready all the time.
This is something that is not needed for every artist out there, but if you’re someone who enjoys watercolour painting, a stack of watercolour paper is a must-have. People have this wrong notion that you can use watercolour on any kind of paper, but that is not true. Watercolour is a medium that has different properties from the other kinds of paints, and that is why you would need a special kind of paper for it.
The watercolour paper actually comes with various types and pressures — the most common ones are the hot-pressed watercolour papers, cold-pressed, and rough. So, you have to figure out which kind of watercolour paper works the best for you.
When anyone thinks of painting, the first thing that will probably pop up in their mind is the canvas. After all, it is the canvas where painters stroke their brushes to create the next masterpiece. So, if you specialize in painting, then you definitely need to have at least one canvas in your art space. You shouldn’t have a hard time finding canvases since they can be found and bought anywhere and they also come with a variety of sizes. All you have to do is find the right canvas that suits you.
The canvas may be an iconic art tool for painting, but painting is literally pointless without the paints themselves. So, if you’re an aspiring painter, then you should always have a supply of paints ready at your workspace.
Luckily for you, the art of painting actually comes with a variety of mediums to choose from. There are acrylic paints, oil paints, watercolour, inks, and many more, and all these types of paints have their own properties and characteristics that make them different from each other. Sometimes, there are paints that would become your personal preference, and sometimes, there are paints that suit a project better than the others.
As a result, when you have to stock up on your paints, it’s always a good idea to keep a variety of them. Sure, over time, you’ll definitely develop a preference, but sometimes, you’ll get the urge to try out a different medium. And for that, you need to be ready.
Just like the canvas and paints, the easel is another staple in the art of painting. This art tool is the stand or frame that supports an artist’s canvas, and though it can be definitely helpful, some artists choose not to have one. This is because, for them, they think that the easel would just take up unnecessary space. It also doesn’t help that the easel can be expensive. But if your art space has enough room and you can afford it, it’s ideal to have an easel around.
Brushes are to painters what pencils are to sketch artists. Your painting will never come out as masterful and beautiful if you don’t have the brushes that you need. But luckily, paintbrushes are easy to be found, and they also come in a variety of sizes and shapes that fulfill different painting styles and techniques. As a result, you’ll definitely need more than one paintbrush for your art space. So, do your research on the various kinds of paintbrushes, and stock up on the ones that you think suit your style.
When you’re painting, you will discover that you need to have something where you can squeeze your paints in one place. This is because that way, you’ll have an easier time reaching for these paints or mixing them to get that desired shade. If that’s the case, then you definitely need to have a palette, which is a rigid, flat surface on which a painter arranges or mixes their paints. Palettes are incredibly handy when you’re painting, so never miss out on them.

Perseverance, determination, and creativity are of course the pillars in an artist’s growth and success. But sometimes, the secret to creating a great artwork can also lie on the art supplies that an artist has. That is why it is incredibly important to have the right essential tools in your art space and to know how to use them wisely. So, search for the art supplies that you need. And once you’ve found them, stock them up and use them to your heart’s content.

]]>Ontario College of Art and Design University, OCAD U, is one of the top art school in Canada. It is also known as the oldest art and design school, which was established in Toronto since 1876. In 2010, the school had officially become a university, OCAD U. The school still reserved its tradition of disciplines after the adjustment. Hence, students will learn more from their experiences.
Drawing and painting is a 4-year program, where students will mostly be working in a studio, learning how to apply the concept in their work, collaborating with different types of medium and technology.
Students also will have the basic knowledge of most mediums, which also include some adobe software…etc. Plus you will have the ability to work independently. Are you someone who is in love with art? Are you someone who likes to work hands-on? Are you someone who likes to work independently? If so this course is definitely for you!
Note: If you prefer working hands-on, you will definitely like the program Drawing and Painting.
Note: they have English class for ESL (English second language) for the first year
Notice: There are two ways to submit your portfolio. If you live in the area that OCAD U provided, an interview is required (25 CAD will be changed). If you are not living in the area, then you may apply through SlideRoom (12 USD will be changed).
Tip: make sure to show your sketchbook, it does not have to be perfect, but OCAD U really cares if you do art in your own. They also prefer creative work then still life, so it would be great to balance the works that you are submitting.
In the beginning, I thought I would be able to draw and paint what I want. Yet it did not go with my expectation. Instead, I learned the basic knowledge of the common medium in drawing and painting. For instance, acrylic painting, oil painting, watercolour, sketching, colour pencil…etc. That also includes some common software, such are photoshop, premier, illustration, flash…etc. I basically have to follow what the professor told us to do, paint/draw what they want. The classes were very traditional, I had to do many life drawing/painting. I remember it was also my first time painting a nude model, and I found it interesting.
Although I already know some of it, I still go the opportunity to learn a different kind of medium. Which helped me a lot in the future of creating art.
by Ronald Huo
In the second year, I realized that we focus more on my major. Which means I started to paint and draw more, and learn advanced skills. Such as building my own canvas…yeah about that, I realize it’s better to buy canvas in the art store. Unless you want to paint on a certain shape. Comparing to the first year, I was able to combine my style and concept in my works. On the academic side, I was required to take liberal art studies, this helped me to build the concept in art. The painting beside the text is also one of my painting from the second year. The difference between the one in the first year is that I built the canvas myself. It also includes my own content and style.
by Danielle Coleman
During the third year, I started to learn how to apply and build the concept. There were basically no limits for creating art. For instance, in most of my classes, they did not have any specific topic or way to create. I also got an opportunity to assist in AGO through one of the OCAD U course. Furthermore, I also get to know how to be an artist, basically learning how to build the path to my career.

This year is a practice/start for students to be an independent artist. They will be preparing their artworks, and writing their artist statement for the GradEx, which is an exhibition for fourth-year students. I personally think that it is a great opportunity to practice to become an artist. During the year you can still get help from the professors. GradEx is also a great way to promote yourself because many people will come. The final work will be like a result of how much you learned from Drawing and Painting at OCAD U.
by Ivan Alifan
The program Drawing and Painting at OCAD U will help you develop skills and technique with different mediums. You will be able to work independently with a strong concept in your work. At the end of the 4 years program of Drawing and Painting, you will realize how many things you are capable of.
]]>And then that experimentation became a big deal when the first feature-length animated movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, was released back in 1937 and blew everyone’s minds. Since then, animation’s trajectory just skyrocketed, and nowadays, you can see products of animation everywhere — from movies, shows, to video games. Long story short, animation as an art form may be young, but it’s one of the most beloved in our current time.
Considering that animation has undergone major development throughout the years, it is then no wonder that it currently has numerous types and techniques. And right now, you’re probably wondering: what are the different kinds of animation? They are as follows:
First things first: before the film was invented and created the types of animation that we are most familiar with right now, there were early forms of animated pictures. The perfect example of these early animation forms is the zoetrope. The zoetrope is essentially just a wheel with a number of static pictures around the inside so that when the wheel spins, it would look like the pictures would move as well.
Other early forms would also include flipbook animation, object animation, chuckimation, and pixilation. Flipbook animation is similar to zoetrope, but instead of a wheel, flipbook places pictures on every page of a book so that it creates an illusion that the pictures are moving once the pages are flipped quickly.
Meanwhile, object animation and chuckimation involve filming regular inanimate objects and animating them using stop-motion or off-camera hand-movement. And finally, pixilation is similar to the previous two, but instead of using inanimate objects, pixilation uses people as stop-motion characters.
Oftentimes referred to as hand-drawn animation or cel animation, traditional animation is the first form of animation that we are officially introduced to. The first animated movies, such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, were created with this technique.
Traditional animation is a very lengthy and tedious process. To begin with, thousands of pictures were drawn by hand on acetate sheets — or cels — and each cel has to be slightly different from the one before it. After that, each cel has to be photographed onto a separate frame of film so that when the film reel would be played, the animation would move.
Sometimes, this type of animation can also be combined with live-action video by placing the cels on top of the film. Films like Space Jam and Who Framed Roger Rabbit made use of that particular technique.
Now that the process of traditional animation has been established, one can see that this type of animation takes an enormous amount of artistic skill. And though the popularity of traditional animation has dwindled a little bit in our current time due to the rise of digital techniques, it still remains to be a vital part of animation.
So long as animation is still alive as an art form, the techniques of traditional animation will also continue to endure the test of time.
It is not an understatement to say that computer technology completely revolutionized the field of animation. Simply put, computer animation is anything that is created digitally using a computer. Computer animation has technically been around since the 1960s, but it only came to prominence in the 1990s when animators started to use it alongside traditional animation. And since technology evolves quite fast, computer animation has developed two main types. They are the following:
Essentially speaking, digital 2D animation is just like traditional animation but instead of hand-drawn illustrations, it can be created digitally. To be more specific, digital 2D animation is vector-based, and it simultaneously uses the exact same techniques as traditional animation and computer interpolation.
This type of animation can usually be created using computer programs like Flash, After Effects, Cel Action, and TV Paint. And just like traditional animation, 2D animation can use different layers to build up pictures. Since 2D animation is vector-based, it generally lacks depth, and as a result, it’s not used for artistic purposes as much anymore.
That said, 2D animation is still commonly used in advertising and desktop publishing. Additionally, it is also the basis of many graphical user interfaces (GUIs) that we use every day, such as Mac OS and Microsoft Windows.
Commonly referred to as CGI (computer-generated imagery) or CG (computer-generated), digital 3D animation is the process of generating three-dimensional moving images in a digital environment. The way this usually works is that an animator will create a very simple version called a skeleton for a digital character (Avar) and then build up from this with digital muscles, skin, hair, pores, etc.
After this, the animator will then use keyframing to set the Avar’s position, but unlike traditional animation, they won’t need to do this on every frame. They just need to do it on the key ones, and then the computer programs will then fill in the movement between these keyframes to create a full animation.
That said, one can see that digital 3D animation works in a completely different way than traditional animation. If traditional animation requires an animator to be an amazing draftsman, computer animation requires you to be able to manipulate puppets.
This kind of animation has more depth than digital 2D, and as a result, this is more commonly utilized nowadays.
Motion capture, sometimes commonly known as mo-cap or mocap, is the process of recording the movement of objects or people. In other words, this type of animation aims to make 3D digital animation as life-like as possible. The way this works is that an actor will be filmed doing actions, speaking, or even acting full scenes, while special sensors on their body and face are “capture” by a film camera. This is then translated into a digital character, which can be controlled by an animator.
This type of animation is often used in blockbusters, like the superhero movies and those others that deal with non-human characters.

At first thought, stop motion may seem simple, but in reality, it’s actually a lot hard and time-consuming. Basically, stop motion is a form of animation where objects are physically manipulated and filmed frame-by-frame. Just like the other types of animation, stop motion comes in many forms. For starters, object animation and pixilation can use the stop-motion technique without specialist equipment, but special stop-motion models have often been utilized for special effects in live-action films.
Other forms of stop motion make use of artistic materials to create physical objects. A perfect example of this is cut-out animation, which involves flat pictures being physically cut out of paper or fabric and then animated. Puppets can also be used for stop motion as well as clay and plasticine figures. Using clay and plasticine figures is called claymation, and this is a form of stop motion that takes a really long time since a figure has to be moved about twelve times for every second of film.
In a way, stop motion shares a lot of similarities with traditional animation. But unlike traditional animation, stop motion still continues to be a popular form. This is because many animators work with stop motion for artistic reasons since it is still difficult to recreate stop motion models digitally.

Animation may be a young art form, but it is one of the fast-growing and most beloved of all time. Everywhere we look, we see products of animation: from blockbuster films to hit TV shows to advertisements to video games. Indeed, it has truly become one of the most popular art forms out there.
And since animation has evolved and developed so much over the years, it is no surprise that it now has a lot of types and techniques on its belt. Starting from traditional animation, then evolving to stop motion, and then computer animation, we see that animation is showing no signs of slowing down. It will continue to evolve and develop, and more types and techniques will be born someday. In other words, the trajectory of animation is on an upward climb, and nothing can stop animation from growing.

]]>Soon enough, animation started to get traction, and in our time right now, we’re witnesses of its popularity. Practically everywhere, you can see animation at play — from movies to TV shows, to video games, and many more. In other words, we can truly say that animation may be one of the youngest art forms, but it is definitely one of the most flourishing.
The rise in popularity of animation comes with the rise of the number of aspiring animators out there. More and more people want to tell stories through an animated medium, which is a good thing to hear.
But learning the craft of animation is no easy task. It requires so many skills for an aspiring animator to succeed. They should have the creativity and imagination, the drawing skills, computer literacy and familiarity with graphics software - since computers are their primary art tool - the patience, and attention to detail, and the communication and storytelling abilities. And the most effective way for an aspiring animator to master all these skills is to attend an animation school.
This will then lead to the big question: how much does it actually cost to attend an animation school in Canada?
Long story short, animation schools in Canada don’t come cheap. It costs a lot to be able to attend art classes, studying the craft of animation, and to hone your own skills as an animator. It’s a little tricky to determine a definitive price because each animation school is different. That said, the safe estimate is that an animation school would charge between $4,000 to $5,000 per term. This would mean that in its entirety, you’d have to spend between $16,000 to $30,000, depending on the school and the diploma program.
To give you an even better and more in-depth look, here are three examples of animation schools in Canada and their costs:
Toronto Film School offers two diploma programs: you can either opt for the 18-month diploma program or the 12-month one. One term costs $5,745, which means that if you chose the 18-month program (which has six terms), your total fee would be $35,158. And if you choose the 12-month program, the total fee would be $22,980.
If you’re an international student, you will have to pay an extra fee. For the 18-month program, the international fee is an additional $18,458, and for the 12-month one, it’s an additional $12,064.
Vancouver Animation School offers three different options of class bundles for an aspiring animator.
The first is the Introductory Online Courses, which are intended for students to discover new learning areas by bringing awareness and application together. There are no pre-requisites, and anyone — whether you’re a beginner or advanced — can choose to attend. This option costs $499 per month (or per class, since the classes here last one month). The total fee that you might pay is going to vary from person to person because there is no required number of months or classes that you have to take. So, if you only choose to study one class, you’ll only have to pay $499. But if you want to take more, then, of course, you’re also going to pay more.
The second option is the 1-Year Online Diploma Program. This is a 12 months accredited diploma program that is career-focused and structured like a typical semester in college. This diploma costs $18,500 in its entirety.
And the final option is what they call as the 1-Year Combined Diploma. What this means is that the student’s time is divided between online and onsite learning. Every Friday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., students have to spend three hours with in-person sessions and interacting with their peers and other industry professionals.
In other words, this program is designed to let students take advantage of experiential learning. This one costs $24,500 in its entirety.
The Vancouver Institute of Media Arts offers a ton of degrees and programs, ranging from 2D/3D character animation to acting for film and television to other aspects of media arts. For its 2D/3D Character Animation program, it consists of four terms, and all in all, it costs $25,750 for Canadians and $31,750 for international students. Its program duration is 12 months.
Animation has become one of the most popular art forms in the world. So, it’s just understandable that more and more people have also expressed their passion for it. Thankfully, animations school exist, and aspiring animators can go there to broaden their knowledge and hone their skills.
However, it should be noted that animation schools are expensive. The total cost can usually be estimated to be roughly between $16,000 to $30,000, depending on the school and the duration of the program that you choose. So, yeah. If you plan to go to an animation school, then you better be prepared to shoulder the possible expenses.
But at the end of the day, it will all be worth it. This is because, at the end of the day, you are learning to become a better animator. And someday, you’ll be able to produce your own animated artwork that will take everyone’s breath away.

]]>The popularity of animation as an art form began to rise exponentially, and right now, animation can be seen in various forms of entertainment medium. We see a ton of animated films and TV shows now, and we also see a ton of animated video games.
Because of this massive development of animation, more and more people are starting to express their passion for it. Animating for a film or show is the most popular route for aspiring animators. But another popular choice is animating for a video game.
But learning how to design a game is not something that can be done overnight. It takes a lot of studying and practice. Not to mention, it also needs a lot of skills to be mastered. Some of these needed skills include computer literacy and familiarity with operating systems and, of course, creativity and imagination.
So, how do you get to learn all about game design? Simple — just go to a school that offers game design classes and study there.
It sounds simple enough, but there is still one question that needs to be addressed. How much does it cost to go to a game design school, particularly in Canada?
To get it out of the way, you should know that attending a game design school is going to be expensive. You have to prepare yourself in spending a lot of money to attend classes and hone your skills as a game designer.
It’s a little tricky to try and give an exact answer to this question because it will depend on the school that you’re going to go. If we have to give an estimated guess, it would probably at around $30,000 in total. So, yeah — game design schools don’t come cheap at all.
If you truly want to get a better look at the possible cost you’re going to pay, then here four examples of schools that offer game design classes in Canada and how much they cost.
True to its name, the Vancouver Institute of Media Arts — or VanArts, for short — offers a ton of degrees and programs in relation to media arts. They have programs for 2D/3D animation, acting for film and television, visual effects, web development and interactive design, and professional photography. And of course, they also offer programs for game design.
This program consists of four terms in the span of 12 months. And in its entirety, the tuition fee costs $30,750 for Canadian students and $37,750 for international ones.
The Game Design program at Fanshawe College is an intensive three-year advanced diploma that really does in-depth in their training. The program’s goal is to provide the students with skills, both professional and artistic, that are necessary to create compelling and innovative games.
Fanshawe’s Game Design Program costs $3,666.67 per term (for Canadians) and $8,068.71 per term (for international students). And since this is a three-year program with six terms, then the total costs will be $22,000.02 for Canadians and $48,412.26 for international students.
Toronto Film School offers three programs that are related to game design. Two are on-campus programs with six terms in the span of 18 months — and these are Video Game Design and Animation and Video Game Design and Development. Meanwhile, the third one, also called Video Game Animation, is an online program with eight terms and a duration of 24 months.
Each term in Toronto Film School amounts to $5,745 (for the first four terms) and $6,089 (for the last remaining terms). This means that the two on-campus game design programs will cost $35,158 in total for Canadians. For international students, there will be an additional $18,458.
On the other hand, the online Video Game Animation program amounts to $915 per course. And since it has 21 courses in all, its total fee would be $19,215. Unlike the first two, this program requires no additional fee for international students.
The Visual College of Art and Design of Vancouver, or VCAD for short, offers two programs in relation to game design. The first is, of course, aptly named Game Development and Design, which is a three-year program with a total of six terms. Aside from game design and animation techniques, this program also offers art classes in traditional artistic techniques like colour theory and life drawing. The total tuition for this is $37,325.06 for Canadians and $46,307.81 for international students.
The second program that they offer is the Mobile Game Design and Development program. It is a lot similar to the previous program, but this one focuses on the emerging field of mobile application design and development. It’s a 12-month program with a total of four terms in all. And its tuition fee amounts to $22,970.68 for Canadians and $28,549.93 for international students.
A video game is an artwork of its own, and nowadays, game design is a thriving field. With this, it just makes sense that there are a ton of aspiring game designers out there. And these aspiring game designers are quite lucky because there are a lot of schools that they can go to to learn more about game design and hone their skills.
However, you should note that it’s not cheap to go into a game design school. As what you can see in the schools mentioned above, the tuition more or less costs $30,000. And though there are still other schools not mentioned, you can expect that their tuition is also around the same price. So, yeah — basically, going to a game design school will break your bank. And you have to be ready for it.
But at the end of the day, it will all be worth it. This is because you’ll eventually become the best game designer you can be and you’ll be able to finally create a game that is not only immersive but also really innovative.

Since the fashion industry has proven to be a lucrative one, a lot of people have expressed their desire to work there. Oftentimes, it’s not even just about the profitability of the industry — rather, it’s about the passion for fashion that some people have. But though you’re interested in working for fashion because you’re passionate, you might be wondering which field you’d like to be in.
For an industry as big as fashion, there is obviously a wide array of fields under it. And two of the most prominent ones are fashion design and fashion technology.
But what is the difference between fashion design and fashion technology? Can’t you just choose whichever and be contented with it? To help you in your confusion, this article will tackle the differences between these two fields. That way, you’ll be able to determine which of the two fits the best for you.
Essentially speaking, fashion design is the art of applying design, aesthetics, and natural beauty to clothing and its accessories. This field is generally believed to have begun in the 19th century with Charles Frederick Worth as he was the first designer to have his label sewn into the garments that he created. And since its conception, fashion design has continued to evolve, and as of right now, modern fashion design is divided into three primary categories: haute couture, mass market, and mass market.
To begin with, haute couture, a French term that translates to “high sewing/dressmaking” or “high fashion” in English, is the creation of exclusive custom-fitted clothing. In other words, the haute couture creations are constructed by hand from start to finish, made from high-quality, expensive, and often unusual fabric, and sewn with extreme attention to detail.
Meanwhile, mass-market fashion is the total opposite of haute couture. Mass-market clothes are catered to a wide range of customers and are usually created with cheaper fabrics and simpler production techniques. That is why the end products for this kind of fashion are sold much more cheaply.
And finally, the last category is ready-to-wear, which is essentially just a cross between haute couture and mass market. From the name itself, ready-to-wear refers to the factory-made clothing that is sold in finished condition in standardized sizes. Ready-to-wear clothes are not made for individual customers, but they are still sold in small quantities to guarantee exclusivity, making them more expensive to buy.
Understandably, the first answer that anyone will think of when asked by this question is: “fashion designers design clothes — obviously.” And that is true — designing is essentially the primary tasks that fashion designers do. But one thing that people forget to consider is the fact that fashion designers do a lot beyond just designing.
It’s been mentioned that fashion has evolved since its beginnings in the 19th century — or even before that. This means that over time, it has been influenced by cultural and social attitudes, which are actually quite fickle. Cultural and social attitudes change so often, and if fashion is influenced by them, then designers have to look into them in order to catch up.
What this means is that fashion designers always conduct research on fashion trends, and then they interpret these trends for their audience. Additionally, when creating the clothes, designers have to make sure that they’re not just aesthetically pleasing. They have to make sure that the clothes are functional as well. All in all, fashion designers need to put a lot of effort into creating clothes. That is why fashion design is considered as an art form after all.
Because fashion design requires so much effort and skill, it is highly recommended for aspiring fashion designers to take an education in this field. Thankfully, there are a lot of programs out there for fashion design, so this problem will be easily taken care of.
To begin with, aspiring fashion designers can take a certificate program or an associate’s degree if they’re a little unsure of this. A certificate program usually takes about one year of study while an associate’s degree takes about two years. In these two, students get to learn fundamental and technical skills like tailoring, sewing, and basic fashion theories.
If the students want to pursue further education, they can take up a bachelor’s degree, which takes about four years of study. And if they want to pursue their education even further, they can choose to take up a master’s degree or a doctorate.
The education in a bachelor’s degree — and by extension, a master’s and a doctorate — is much more in-depth than in a certificate program or an associate’s degree. Of course, the curriculum depends on the school you’re going to, but there are some classes that fashion schools all share. These classes that fashion design schools all teach their students are the following:
In a way, fashion technology is closely related to fashion design. Fashion technology is described as the field that primarily focuses on the study of fabric types and suitability. It deals with examining various kinds of fabric and then choosing the appropriate fabric for the final product.
Basically, fashion technology shares similarities with fashion design —particularly in the study of design and aesthetics — but just with a more technical bent. Unlike fashion design that has a core focus on the designing aspects, fashion technology deals with the core garment manufacturing technology. In other words, fashion technology is more involved in apparel production.
As the definition of fashion technology suggests, fashion technologists — more commonly known as clothing/textile technologists — work with fabrics. They study a variety of them, both man-made and natural fibres, including but not limited to leather, fur, metals, and plastics. They will also source fabrics or textiles that are fit for purpose and carry out quality control tests.
Basically, clothing technologists work on the development of products, improving production efficiency and quality, while also developing connections with those involved in the production process.
To get an even better look of what clothing technologists do, here is a list of the most common tasks that they do:
Since fashion technology deals with a lot of technical aspects of fashion, studying the field for a few years is highly recommended. And luckily, just like fashion design, fashion technology comes with a lot of programs. You can take up education in this field with a certificate program, an associate’s degree, a bachelor’s, or even a master’s or a doctorate. The choice will depend on you.
The curriculum for fashion technology will vary from school to school. But to some extent, all schools do share a few course subjects. These subjects are as follows:

So, now that we’ve differentiated fashion design from fashion technology, you’re probably wondering: which is the better choice? To make the decision-making process easier for you, it’s better if we compare these two fields side by side:

Fashion Technology |

As you can see, both fashion design and fashion technology overlap a few similarities but divert in a few differences. If we have to choose which one is better, we might choose fashion technology, simply because it covers a whole lot more. It may focus more on the technical side of fashion, but it does also touch on the designing part. In other words, fashion technology will allow you to become fashion designers, but fashion design won’t allow you to become fashion technologists.
But even though fashion technology covers a wider range of study, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right fit for you. At the end of the day, the choice will boil down on your preferences and goals. Sure, you’re interested in fashion, but what aspect of fashion are you really interested in? Are you more interested in the creation of clothing part? Or are you more interested in examining fabrics and textiles? In other words, in terms of fashion, are you more creative, or are you more technical?
Answering that question should help you in your dilemma. And besides, both fashion design and fashion technology are great, so it won’t really hurt you whatever you’ll choose eventually. They’re both still under the industry of fashion, a field that you’re passionate about. No matter what you’ll choose in the end, you will still get to live your fashion dreams.

But when you’re an aspiring artist, trying to figure out how to pursue an art career is quite overwhelming. After all, since art has been around for a long time, it has grown quite large nowadays. And as of right now, its scope is literally so broad that it’s difficult to name every field that is under art.
So, if that’s the case, what hope is there for aspiring artists to figure out how to make a career in this field? Why don’t they just give up because it’s so overwhelming?
Please don’t give up on art just because of this. The world will never stop needing artists, so it’s important that you fulfil your dream come true. And if it’s the overwhelming nature of trying to carve a career path that scares you, then don’t worry.
This is what this post is here for. It’s here to guide you — to walk you through everything you need to know about art, art schools, and art jobs. This way, you’ll be more informed, and someday, you’ll be able to make the right decisions when it comes to pursuing a career in art.
So, without any further ado, here are all the important things about art, school, and career that you need to know.
It’s mentioned earlier that art is a very broad field. Ever since it existed, art has developed and grown all these years, so it makes sense that it has so many other fields under it. Nowadays, there are so many things considered as art.
Architecture, animation, game design, interior design, and fashion design are some of the fields considered as art. Even literature, theatre, and music are considered as art. Long story short, with art’s popularity, it has so many branches as of right now.
So, what are the branches of art that we’re talking about here? For the sake of this post, we’re going to focus on the visual arts, particularly painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramic art, and photography. There are other art forms under visual arts, like video, filmmaking, architecture, and the design art forms (industrial, graphics, fashion, and interior). But for the sake of making this post coherent, we won’t focus on them. Besides, these other forms of visual arts have become broad themselves that they have their own schools.
Essentially speaking, drawing is a form of visual art in which a person makes use of various drawing instruments to mark paper or another two-dimensional medium. Some of the most common drawing instruments used are graphite pencils, pen and ink, various kinds of paints, inked brushes, charcoal, coloured pencils, crayons, chalk, and pastels.
Drawing is perhaps one of the oldest — if not, the oldest — forms of human expression via the visual arts. It is generally concerned with the making of lines and areas of tone onto paper or other material. In other words, drawing involves using the fundamental elements of visual arts to accurately represent the visual world. As a result, drawing is an important art form for artists. No matter what field they specialize in, it is recommended for artists to master drawing first and foremost.
Painting is an art form that involves the application of paint, pigment, colour, or another medium to a solid surface. Some of the most commonly used media include oil, pastel, acrylic, watercolour, ink, enamel, and more. The chosen medium is then usually applied to the base with a brush, but sometimes, other implements like knives, sponges, or airbrushes can be used.
As an art form of visual arts, painting brings in elements from so many fields, particularly drawing, gesture, composition, narration (for narrative art), and abstraction (for abstract art). Additionally, painting has a wide array of styles: painters can choose to make their artworks naturalistic and representational, or they can opt for it to be photographic, abstract, narrative, symbolistic, emotive, or political.
As the name suggests, printmaking is the process of creating artworks by printing, normally on paper. These artworks, aptly called prints, are created by transferring ink from a matrix or through a prepared screen to a sheet of paper or other material. Some of the common types of matrices are metal plates (usually copper or zinc), polymer plates (for engraving or etching), stone, aluminum, blocks of wood, and linoleum.
Sculpture is an art form of visual arts that operates in three dimensions. In its beginning stages, sculptors originally used carving (the removing of material) and modelling (the addition of material, like clay) in materials such as stone, metal, ceramics, wood, and others. However, since the rise of the Modernism movement, there has been almost complete freedom of materials and processes.
One of the primary purposes of sculpture is in some form of association with religion. In various cultures all over the world, particularly the ones in ancient Greece and Egypt, people made sculptures of their gods to show their devotion. But aside from that, other subject matters that are incorporated in sculptures are rulers, animals, and enlarged versions of ordinary tools.
Another art form that operates in three dimensions, ceramic art is an art made from ceramic materials, such as earthenware, porcelain, and brick, and clay. The products of ceramic art usually come in many forms, some of the most common including tableware, tiles, figurines, and even sculpture. Some of the primary elements involved in ceramic art include the shape of the object, the decorating by painting, carving and other methods, and the glazing found on most ceramics.
A lot of people may consider ceramics as a form of fine art, and though that’s partly true, some ceramics are also considered to be decorative, industrial, or applied art objects. Additionally, ceramics may even be also considered as artifacts in archaeology.
Photography, in its broadest sense, is the art, application, and practice of creating durable images by recording light or other electromagnetic radiation, either through the use of an image sensor or the use of a light-sensitive material such as photographic film.
Meanwhile, fine-art photography is a particular kind of photography that is created in accordance with the vision of the artist as a photographer. In this particular form, photography is used as a medium to bring to life something that lives in the artist’s mind. In other words, fine-art photography aims to express an idea, a message, or an emotion through photos.
With this, fine-art photography is usually considered as a contrast to other forms of photography such as commercial photography, which focuses on the advertising of products or services, and representational photography. Representational photography often takes in the form of photojournalism, which provides a documentary visual account of specific subjects and events. It literally represents the objective reality, unlike fine-art photography represents the subjective intent of the photographer.

Once you’ve discovered what kind of art you’re good at, you’re probably now excited to find a great school. But before you get too eager, there’s one thing you should know first about applying to art schools. And that is the fact that all art schools will require you to submit to them an art portfolio.
Simply put, an art portfolio is simply an edited collection of an artist’s best artworks. The primary goal for this portfolio is to show to the art school administrators your own style as an artist, as well as your creativity and method of work. Additionally, the portfolio is also meant to show them your strengths and weaknesses, your potential, and your growth. In other words, your acceptance to an art school will heavily depend on your portfolio. And that is why it’s highly important for you to take this seriously.
To help you in this process of creating an art portfolio, here is a rundown of the best tips you can use:
Making an art portfolio doesn’t happen overnight. If you really want to make it the best it possibly can, then you also need to start thinking about it early. So, start thinking of what art forms you enjoy making. And even better, start asking advice from your art teachers or anyone you know who is a working artist or who has attended an art school. The earlier you learn, the better.
In your early stage of creating a portfolio, one thing you should do is to do your research on possible programs and art schools. Of course, you’re not applying to them now. But it’s really an excellent idea to start narrowing down your list of art schools you want to go to.
Once you have a working list, start looking them up and reading all about their programs. Read the criteria for application numerous times so as to make sure that you won’t get them wrong in the future. Additionally, if you can, delve also into their alumnae and faculty list and observe their artworks. This is because looking at their artworks will give you a feel of the school. And sometimes, you might not like the vibe that a particular school is giving you. If that’s the case, better you know it early on.
Originality is a big deal in the art world, so you better showcase that in your portfolio. What this means is: avoid fan art and celebrity portraits. Instead, put in artworks that are borne out of your inventive thinking. Those are always way more interesting.
Art schools may prefer to look at the technical aspects of your art. But that doesn’t mean they won’t appreciate it if you put in something that is completely unexpected.
So, try experimenting with some of your projects. Try creating in other media or style or art form. You don’t have to eventually put them on the portfolio if you end up not liking them. But try anyway. It will make for a fun experience, plus you’re bound to learn something that will help you grow as an artist.
This one should be a no-brainer. Of course, the artworks you’re going to include will show your strengths. It’s even better if you can showcase a variety of them. What this means is that in addition to artworks showing your strengths, you should also put artworks that are diverse in terms of approach, media, and content. That will show your range and versatility as an artist. And those two things are always impressive to art school administrators.
This one is actually not necessary. In fact, sometimes, it’s not even recommended. However, that said, some art schools will allow you putting in unfinished artworks. And if that’s the case, then you should grab that opportunity and include one or two unfinished artworks of yours.
Why is this a good idea? This is a good idea because unfinished artworks will display your thinking process as an artist. And for some art schools, they are interested in seeing your process. They believe that it will let them see what kind of artist you are. So, consider putting in unfinished artworks — if and only if the art school allows it.
Of course, the artworks you’re going to put in won’t be the original copies. After all, you’re going to want to keep the originals to yourself and you’re going to be applying for numerous art schools. In that case, you’re going to have to reproduce your artworks. There is no wrong way to do this. But the most common choice of reproduction is through photography. Other choices include photocopying and scanning.
Whatever choice you make, just make sure that the quality of the copies is high. The last thing you’ll want is to jeopardize your chances of getting into an art school because the copies are blurry.
Your art portfolio is kind of like an essay. In order for you to successfully disseminate the ideas that you’re showcasing, it has to be concise and well-arranged. So, start thinking of how you want to arrange the artworks. You can go for a chronological order or arrange them based on style or approach. Think of what you want to say with your portfolio, and you can start arranging them based on that.
If you’re still confused, just ask feedback from other people. That should help you.
Remember when we suggested asking feedback from other people? You can do that during National Portfolio Day.
National Portfolio Day is essentially just an event where aspiring artists get the chance to meet with representatives from art schools all over the country. These representatives will then review their portfolios. That said, you should really take advantage of this opportunity. You will get a first glimpse of how art schools will react to your portfolio. And you’ll also get feedback on the things you need to improve during art events. It’s a win-win situation.
So, now you’ve created your portfolio. It’s time to send it out for application. But first, have you actually decided on what program you want to pick?
In our time right now, there are multiple programs out there for art education. Of course, the most obvious pick is the bachelor’s degree, which takes up four years of study. But if you’re a little hesitant on taking that commitment, you can first opt for a certificate program or an associate’s degree. They take up only one year and two years of study, respectively, and you can transfer to a bachelor’s if you want. You can even opt to take up a master’s degree and a doctorate after your bachelor’s if you are so passionate to learn more about art.
Basically, there are a lot of ways to get educated about art. You just have to choose which one fits your needs right now. And, of course, you have to attend the classes to learn.
When we talk of an “art” school, the first thing that we’ll think of is the on-campus kind. Generally speaking, the on-campus kind of art school is the typical university or college setting. This setting has all the classrooms, libraries, and practical rooms you can go to.
The most obvious advantage that an on-campus art school offers is the fact that your education will be more experiential and active. You’re inside a classroom with your classmates and a teacher, so there’s a communication happening during the lessons. Additionally, when you have to do practical exercises, the teacher will supervise the whole thing, and if you’re doing something wrong, they can easily correct it. Aside from that, you’ll also have access to art materials and tools.
Sure, you have to provide for yourself one day, but it’s still great to know that your school will provide for you for now. This way, you’ll get to see which materials and tools you like best and which ones you don’t.
In other words, an on-campus art school offers a hands-on, active, and experiential kind education. As a result, if you want to pursue an education in art, it’s recommended to choose this kind of school.
However, even though on-campus art schools are great, not everyone is lucky enough to go there. And if this is the case, then aspiring artists should consider studying art online instead. Here are some reasons as to why online art schools are a great choice as well:
The biggest benefit of online art schools is flexibility in terms of time. Sure, just like any other school, you will also have deadlines to remember. But beyond that, your schedule is up to you. You get to learn anywhere, anytime — just make sure you have a stable Internet connection.
Speaking of flexibility, you’ll also get to learn at your own pace with online art schools. We all know that in traditional schools, we’re always pressured to catch up with the lessons because there is a fixed schedule. This can be a problem because not everyone learns fast. Some people need more time to let lessons sink in.
Thankfully, with online schools, that problem is taken care of. Now, you can download the lectures, either in written or video format, and then read or watch them for as many times as you like. That way, you’ll grasp the lessons better, which makes for a better experience.
An online school will also make the interaction between your classmates and teachers easy. Understandably, it’s different from the kind of interaction you’ll get in on-campus schools. But interacting online is also beneficial in its own way. If you need to communicate with your classmates or teachers about something ASAP, all you have to do is to message or video-call them.
Basically, with online art schools, reaching to your peers and teachers can be done easily. You don’t have to wait for the next day to speak to them face-to-face because you can contact them with just one click on your phone or computer.
Online art schools are undoubtedly a great alternative for art education. However, it does have one major disadvantage. And that is the lack of access to necessary art materials and tools.
It’s true that eventually when you get a job, you’ll have to provide these art materials and tools for yourself. But at least, when you’re still at school, on-campus art schools will give you access to the necessary materials and tools.
However, this is not the case with online art schools. With an online school, you have to figure out for yourself how you’re going to compensate for it. This might mean buying the materials and tools for yourself or borrowing someone else’s. Either way, it’s going to be extra work and possibly extra expensive. And you need to prepare for that.

]]>And since video games are getting a lot more popular, more and more people start to express an interest in pursuing a career in game design. After all, they’ll be doing what they love — which is to be surrounded by games all the time — and they get paid to do that. And who doesn’t want to make a living out of our passions?
But trying to carve a career path in game design can get pretty overwhelming, especially if you’re still just a student. There are so many things to consider, and thinking about everything will just give you a headache. So, in an effort to make this journey a little less overwhelming and exhausting, this post is made to guide you. In here, you’ll find all the information that you need so that when the time comes, you’ll be able to make the best decisions in your game design career journey.
So, now, without any further ado, let’s take you step-by-step on everything you need to know about paving a path in your game design career.
Essentially speaking, game design is the art of applying design and aesthetics to create a game for entertainment or for educational, exercise, or experimental purpose. So from that definition, we can say game designers are those people who develop and design video games.
It sounds really simple when we put it that way, but in actuality, game design takes up a lot of work. They have a lot of duties to do, such as designing characters, levels, puzzles, art, and animation, and they might even also have to code. So, to be able to do all these tasks, they have to have a lot of traits and skills. At the very least, they should have the following:
If you’re really serious about pursuing a career in game design, then it is highly recommended for you to take up an education first. This is because becoming a game designer isn’t just all about passion. There are also quite a ton of technical aspects that you need to know about as well. And you’ll only get to know all about these technical aspects in depth if you take up education in game design.
Luckily, for you, there are a lot of ways to study game design. For some people who are interested in this field but are not quite sure if they want to go further, they can take a certificate program or an associate’s degree. They only require a year and two years of study, respectively, so they are perfect for aspiring yet unsure game designers to dip their toes into the water. And if you are sure that you want to become a game designer, then you can choose to take up a bachelor’s degree, which takes up four years of study.
You can pursue even higher education if you are so passionate about this field and you want to broaden your knowledge further. And if that’s the case, then consider taking a master’s degree or a doctorate.
Basically speaking, there is a myriad of ways in which you can attain a game design education. All you have to do is to pick the program that fits your needs and attend the classes.
So, right now, you’re probably wondering: I want to take up a degree in game design, but I don’t know what the curriculum looks like. It’s understandable why you’re curious to know what a game design curriculum is. After all, you’d want to see what you have to study, so you’ll get better preparation once the program actually begins.
Normally, it is pretty difficult to make a definitive answer on how a game design curriculum looks like because it depends on the school. For game design, that is still true. But at the same time, the International Game Developers Associations (IGDA) believes that in order for game designers to reach their fullest potential, the industry and schools must work together.
What this means is that they believe that at the very least, schools should have the same fundamental courses to be taught to their students to cultivate a deeper understanding of what drives games. The following are the courses that IGDA recommends for a thorough education for game designers:
When one thinks of attending a school to obtain a game design education, the first thing that will pop to their head is an on-campus school. Basically, an on-campus game design school is the one with the typical university or college setting. It’s the kind that you see on college brochures, with classrooms to go to and lawns where students can hang out or study.
An on-campus school for game design is also one that is the most recommended. This is because you’ll get a more active, hands-on, and experiential kind of education. You’ll face your teacher and your classmates every day during lessons, so there is ongoing communication happening there.
Plus, if you would be doing some practical exercise, the teacher can overlook everything and see if everyone’s doing it right. If they don’t, the teacher can easily correct the students. And finally, with an on-campus game design school, you will also have access to the technologies used for game design.
Basically, an on-campus game design school is a great route to take when taking education in game design. You get to interact with your peers and teachers on a regular basis, plus you get to use all the technologies provided by the school. The educational experience you’ll get from this institution will definitely be impactful.
It’s true that an on-campus game design school is a great choice. After all, with all the benefits it offers, it’s no wonder why people always recommend attending one. However, not everyone is lucky enough to attend an on-campus school. And if this is the case, then those aspiring game designers should consider studying game design online. Here are three reasons why online game design schools are as brilliant as on-campus ones:
The biggest benefit that an online game design school offers is flexibility in terms of time. Sure, just like any other school, there will always be deadlines to remember, but other than that, your day-to-day schedule is up to you. You get to learn anywhere, anytime, so long as you have a stable Internet connection.
Are you a morning person, so studying during daytime is more productive for you? Or are you more of a night owl who thrives in being productive when the whole world is asleep? With an online school, you get to do either! It’s such a liberating feeling.
Speaking of flexibility, online game design schools also allow you to learn at your own pace. We all know that in traditional schools, there’s always the pressure of catching up with the lessons as fast as you can because there is a fixed schedule. This can be a problem for some people because not everyone is a fast learner. Some people need more time to let lessons sink in, and since traditional schools don’t give them more time, they’re forced to learn fast. And that would just take the joy out of learning.
Thankfully, with online schools, that problem is taken out. Now, you can download the lectures (they usually come as either videos or written transcripts), and then read or watch them for as many times as you like. That way, you’ll grasp the lessons better, thus making your experience very meaningful.
An online school will also make the interaction between your classmates and teachers easy, in a way. Sure, it’s actually different from the kind of interaction you’ll get in on-campus schools. But interacting through an online setting is also beneficial in its own way.
If you need to really communicate with your classmates or teachers about something, all you have to do is to message or video-call them. In other words, reaching to them can be done easily. You don’t have to wait for the next day to speak to them face-to-face because you can contact them with just one click on your phone or computer.
We’ve already established all the great things that an online game design school has to offer. But despite all these great things, it does have one major disadvantage. And that is the lack of access to necessary technologies for game design.
As a field, game design is heavily reliant on technology. There are specific gadgets, applications, and software that game designers should have. It’s true that eventually when you get a job, you’ll need to have these for yourself. But at least, when you’re still at school, on-campus game design schools will give you access to the necessary technologies. With an online school, however, this is not the case.
With an online school, you have to figure out for yourself how you’re going to compensate for it. This might mean buying the technologies for yourself or borrowing someone else’s. Either way, it’s going to be extra work and possibly extra expensive. And you have to be ready for that.
At the end of the day, it actually doesn’t matter where you’re going to earn your degree in game design. Sure, going to a prestigious on-campus school will get you some points, but still, your chances of getting a job rely heavily on your own skill set. So, don’t worry too much about where you want to go.
Both traditional game design schools and online ones are great choices. They have their own pros and cons, and it’s up to you to figure out which of the two is the better fit for you.

Now that you’ve finished your game design education, it’s time to find a job. And you should know by now that working as a game designer isn’t exactly all fun and games. There’s so much sweat and blood poured into creating a game, so you have to be ready to exert that much effort.
As was mentioned earlier, the primary task of game designers is to develop and design video games. But that’s only the general overview of their job. When you divide that overview into bite-sized tasks, you’ll realize that game designers need to do a lot of things.
The following are the most common tasks that game designers have to do:
Because the game designer has a lot of tasks to do, the job requires so many skills from those who wish to apply for the position. The following are only some of the skills that you’ll need for this kind of job:
It’s true that the video game industry is thriving as of right now, but that doesn’t mean it will be easy to determine how much game designers get paid. After all, there are quite a lot of factors that come into play when we’re talking about salaries. The most common factors are the ones that follow:
Even though we can’t really make an exact answer for a game designer’s salary, we can at least take a guess. The ones mentioned below are the median annual salaries for video game industry jobs:

]]>Because of the industry’s popularity, it’s no wonder that a lot of people are now dreaming to become a fashion designer someday. After all, the fashion industry is creative and artistic, on top of it being lucrative. So, in the eyes of many, working there is the ultimate dream that they want to come true.
However, pursuing education and, eventually, a career in fashion design is not an easy thing to do. It can get even overwhelming at times, especially if you’re a student just starting to consider this career path. This is why this post exists. It’s here to help you in your fashion dream journey by providing you with all the information that you need to know.
Now, without any further ado, here are the things that you need to know if you’re planning on pursuing a career in fashion design.
Simply put, fashion design is the art of applying design, aesthetics, and natural beauty to clothing and its accessories. So, with that said, fashion designers are simply those people who create original clothing and accessories based on those aforementioned elements. Aside from making their clothes aesthetically pleasing, fashion designers also aim to make them functional as well. In order to create the best clothes and accessories that they possibly can, fashion designers have to regularly conduct research on fashion trends and interpret them for their audience.
Basically, being a fashion designer takes a lot of work. So, if you ever want to become one, you need to be mindful of the ideal traits and skills that a designer should have.
So, what do you have to be if you want to become a fashion designer someday? For starters, you have to be:
As for the skills, these are the ones that you need to have:
Before we get on with the fashion design education and jobs, let’s first tackle another prominent profession in the industry. And that is the fashion merchandiser.
A lot of people out there show a great deal of interest in fashion. But it’s possible that not all of them will be great as designers. Perhaps, they might discover that they’re better off being a fashion merchandiser instead. But what, exactly, is the role of a fashion merchandiser?
Essentially speaking, fashion merchandising is the study of fashion trends to determine merchandising strategy for a retail store or fashion product provider. In other words, it’s a profession that demands both an intuition for fashion trends and an understanding of business management. It shares some similarities with fashion design (both of them require in-depth knowledge about trends and the business), just without the whole designing aspect.
So, you might feel like you will be better off as a fashion merchandiser than as a fashion designer. If that’s the case, you need to have these traits and skills:
Before anyone gets a job in the fashion industry, it’s always recommended to take an education in fashion design or fashion marketing and management first. This is because there are a lot of technical aspects of the fashion industry. And you can only understand them best if you take classes that discuss them in depth.
Luckily for you, there are a lot of programs that will provide you with an education in fashion design or fashion marketing and management. There’s the certificate program which lasts a year, and there’s the associate’s degree which takes about two years. Of course, there’s the bachelor’s degree, which takes up four years of study and is the most popular choice. And if you want to continue even further in your education, you can take a master’s degree or a doctorate.
Basically, there are a lot of ways to get educated about fashion design. You just have to pick which one fits your needs right now and, of course, attend the classes to learn.
If you want to pursue an education in fashion design, you’re probably wondering right now what the course curriculum looks like. Of course, it’s impossible to provide you with a definitive answer since the curriculum will depend on the school you choose to go to. But it is possible to let you see how a fashion design course curriculum will possibly look like. Here are some of the classes that you might take to hone your knowledge and skill in fashion design:
In a lot of ways, fashion design and fashion marketing are different, particularly in their focus. The former obviously focuses on the designing part of fashion while the latter is more on the business and marketing side. That said, both of them still share some similarities, and you can see that in the classes that you’ll take. Some of the classes in the fashion marketing and management course curriculum will be the same ones in the fashion design course. But there are others that are completely exclusive to fashion marketing. They are as follows:
When we talk of a “fashion design” school, the first thing that we’ll think of is understandably the on-campus kind. Basically, the on-campus kind of school is your typical university or college setting, with all the classrooms, libraries, and practical rooms you can go to.
The most obvious advantage that on-campus fashion design school has is the fact that your education will be more experiential and active. You’re inside a classroom with a bunch of classmates and a teacher, so there’s a communication happening during the lessons. Plus, when you have to do practical exercises, the teacher can easily tell you if you’re doing it right or if you need to correct something. Aside from that, you’ll also have access to the technologies and the textiles and fabrics needed in fashion design since your school will have them.
In other words, an on-campus fashion school offers a hands-on, active, and experiential kind education. As a result, if you want to pursue an education in fashion, it’s highly recommended to choose this kind of school.
However, even though an on-campus fashion design school is obviously a good choice, not everyone has the opportunity to do so. If this is the case, then they should consider earning their fashion design degree online.
The biggest benefit that anyone can get from attending an online school is obviously the flexibility it offers. To begin with, you can learn anywhere, anytime, so long as you have a strong Internet connection. And it’s true that just like any kind of school, online schools will have deadlines as well. But beyond that, the schedule is entirely up to you. You can start your classes in the morning, or you can have them at night — whichever you prefer.
In addition to the flexibility in terms of time, you can also learn at your own pace. When it comes to on-campus schools, there’s this pressure of having to catch up with everyone because there’s a fixed schedule. This is bad news for some people because some people don’t learn that fast.
They need more time to let the lessons sink in so that they will fully understand everything. Providing more time is not something that on-campus schools can really do, but online schools definitely do. With online schools, you can download the classes either in written or video format, and you can watch or read them as many times as you need to fully grasp the lesson. The pressure has now been lifted off your shoulders.
You can also easily interact with your classmates and teachers. Sure, it’s not the same as with the classroom setting, but with an online school, you can simply email, message, or video-call your classmates or teachers if you need to. In a way, this is an advantage because you can reach out to anyone important easily without having to worry about finding time to meet them face-to-face.
But despite all the good things that online fashion design schools have to offer, there is one glaring disadvantage. And that is the fact that you won’t be able to have access to the technologies and the textiles and fabrics as well as the hands-on practical exercises that on-campus schools provide.
Having access to textiles and fabrics and the hands-on practical exercises is important because that is what fashion design all about. And since you won’t be able to have that in an online school, you need to find a way to compensate for it. This means that you have to provide for your own technologies, textiles, and fabrics. You might also need to ask help from a fashion designer you know to supervise you in any of the practical exercises. Basically, you have to do anything you can to make up for the lack of access.
To cut a long story short, you can either attend a traditional, on-campus school or an online one if you want to pursue an education in fashion design. They both have their own pros and cons, and honestly, you’re going to learn practically the same things anyway. So, at the end of the day, it won’t really matter if you chose to go to an on-campus school or an online one. You just have to figure out for yourself which of the two works best for you.
So, you’ve finished your education in fashion design. What now? Well, now you have to go and look for a job.
As was mentioned earlier, fashion designers make original clothing and accessories based on aesthetics, trends, and functionality. But that’s simply one of their many tasks as well as their biggest. But beyond that, they have other tasks that they need to do as well. Some of them are as follows:
Since you can see that a fashion designer job entails a lot of tasks, it’s understandable that it would need a lot of skills as well. These are the essential skills that you will need for a fashion designer job:
The fashion industry may be a multi-billion dollar industry right now, but that doesn’t mean that it’s easy to pinpoint the exact salary of designers. After all, there are a lot of factors that can influence fashion designer salaries. The following are the most common ones:
Even though it’s literally impossible to pinpoint the exact salaries that designers get paid, we can at least make an estimation. The following are the possible salaries that fashion designers might get:
Fashion Industry Career |
Median Annual Salary |
Fashion Designer |
$65,170 |
Merchandise Displayer |
$26,700 |
Marketing Manager |
$131,180 |

Understandably, since the interior design is becoming more popular nowadays, more people are aspiring to pursue a career in this field as well. And it’s not just because working as an interior helps them combine their artistic skills with their business acumen. But it’s also because working as an interior designer just seems so much fun. They get to be creative, and they also get the opportunity to travel and work with a variety of people. In other words, the interior design industry just seems to provide so much opportunity for career growth for anyone interested. And naturally, a lot of people would want that.
However, trying to figure out how to carve your path onto becoming an interior design is exceptionally difficult. This is true especially if you’re still a student. But don’t let that worry you too much. That is what this post is all about. It is to guide you in your journey of becoming an interior designer someday.
So, here are the things about the interior design industry that you should know about to help you in your journey:
Since interior design is a multifaceted field, it’s no wonder that an interior designer should also have a wide array of skills and traits. Having a good eye for design and aesthetics is obviously the first thing that any interior designer should have. And the second important thing is to have some business knowledge. But aside from these two, an interior designer should also have these skills:
Since you are planning to pursue a career in interior design someday, it might help a lot if you figure out now which type you want to specialize. Of course, you can definitely change your mind in the future. But nonetheless, it is still a good idea to determine where your talents lie. That way, you have a place that you can begin with. To help you decide what your possible specializations may be, here is a list of some of the most popular types of interior design:
A lot of the times, people confuse interior design with interior decorating. And though they do have some similarities, they differ greatly from one another, especially in terms of responsibilities. That is why it is crucial that these two are differentiated so that you will know if you’re actually interested in interior design or if you’re actually more inclined to interior decorating.
According to the National Council Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ), interior design is the art and science of understanding people’s behaviour to create functional spaces within a building. Additionally, the interior design process follows a systematic and coordinated methodology, particularly research and analysis, to meet the needs and resources of the client.
Interior decorating, on the other hand, is the furnishing or adorning of a space with fashionable or aesthetically pleasing things. It’s purely focused on aesthetics. In other words, you can say that interior designers may decorate, but interior decorators do not design.
To help you see their differences clearly, here is a chart of their differences laid out.

No formal training is required since interior decorating is purely focused on aesthetics alone. That said, there are classes available, but not degree programs. |

When talking about getting an education in interior design, the first thing that will come to mind is attending an on-campus interior design school. The on-campus interior design school is the one with a typical university or college setting, complete with classrooms that you go to for classes.
The greatest advantage of on-campus schools is that your education is going to be face-to-face and experiential. Aside from learning theories, you get to apply them on practice while also engaging with the teacher and the other students. In other words, there is an active communication going on, which is helpful for aspiring interior designers. Additionally, the training is hands-on, with a teacher overlooking everything and making sure you’re doing everything right.
If you choose to go an on-campus interior design school, you’re going to have to choose a degree program. There are about four kinds of programs that you can choose. They are as follows:
Certificate
A certificate program in interior design is a program that does not have any formal enrollment requirements. Anyone can choose to get into this, and they’ll only have to dedicate about two to three years of coursework. Once the student graduates, they’ll be qualified to work in entry-level positions under the supervision of experienced interior designer.
Associate’s Degree
Just like the certificate program, the associate’s degree doesn’t also require any formal enrollment requirements. And aside from that, it also only requires two to three years of coursework. Once graduated, the student is qualified to work as an assistant to an interior designer. And if they want, they can also choose to enter a bachelor’s degree program seeing that the associate’s degree qualifies them for that as well.
Bachelor’s Degree
Now, this is the one that has formal enrollment requirements. Usually falling within the science, applied arts, or fine arts departments, a bachelor’s degree in interior design requires four years of coursework. And this coursework typically includes interior architecture or industrial design. After a student finishes this program, they are qualified to enter a one- to a three-year formal design apprenticeship program at an architecture or design firm.
Master’s Degree and Doctorate
This is not as common as the first three mentioned. Nonetheless, an interior designer with a bachelor’s degree can choose to take this additional program. A master’s degree or a doctorate is ideal if you want to expand your education on interior design. Both of them usually will add additional insight into industrial design, education, and fine art.
Although on-campus interior design schools offer so many great benefits for aspiring designers, not everyone can attend one. There are multiple reasons for this. It can because they don’t near any interior design school, because they can’t afford to go there, or because they’re preoccupied with their job or family demands. If you are an aspiring designer who can’t go to an on-campus, there’s no need to worry. You can still get an education by applying to an online school.
An online interior design school is highly similar to an on-campus one. They have nearly similar curriculums. The only big difference between the two is that an online school is more lenient and flexible in terms of scheduling. You can choose to take the lectures or pass your assignments whenever you’re able. The schedule is definitely flexible for anyone.
So, when it comes down to it, both an on-campus school and an online school are good choices for getting an education in interior design. You just need to figure out for yourself which path is the best for you.
Whether you choose to go to an on-campus school or an online one, you’ll still essentially learn pretty much the same things. What makes a curriculum different from another is based on the institution you’re getting an education from. But whatever is the case, chances are you’re likely going to study these following courses in some way:
Now that you’re done getting your education on interior design, it’s time to finally get a job. And though interior design offers a wide variety of jobs, they share quite a lot of similar responsibilities. So, no matter which interior design specialization you choose, you’re most likely going to do the following tasks on a regular basis:
It’s pretty difficult to determine the exact salary that interior designers get, simply because there are a lot of factors that come into it. The following are some of the most common factors that affect the salary that interior designers get:
Now that’s out of the way, let’s at least look at the estimated median wages that interior designers get. It’s true that we won’t really know the exact amount, but we can at least have a rough estimate. Here are the median annual salaries for interior designers in the top five industries where they usually work for:
Industry |
Median Annual Salary |
Architectural and engineering firms |
$62,590 |
Wholesale trade |
$55,930 |
Residential building construction |
$57,490 |
Specialized design services |
$56,710 |
Furniture stores |
$48,470 |
For interior designers, along with interior decorators, new job openings are projected to total 10,300 over the period of 2017 to 2026. This employment growth is expected to be higher than the average for all occupations, simply because the demand for interior designers and decorators has significantly increased during the last decade, especially in Ontario. The housing market is strong in this area, so the number of renovations has increased. As a result, there is a huge demand for interior designers and decorators.
It is expected that this demand for designers and decorators will continue over the projection period of 2017-2026. Additionally, school leavers and immigrants are projected to account for the majority of job seekers.
The interior design industry is flourishing as of right now. And why shouldn’t it be? So many people are planning to get houses or to start businesses, and of course, they want their space to not only look good but also function well. So, there is a demand for interior designers already. This demand is a good enough reason to lure people into becoming aspiring designers themselves. But aside from that, becoming an interior designer is also tempting because the job allows your inner creativity to shine through. In other words, being an interior designer just seems like a really fun job to a lot of people.
But if you’re just starting to develop an interest in interior design, it gets overwhelming really fast trying to figure out how to plan your future. There are so many things you need to keep in mind. The school you’re going to go to, the area that you want to focus on, where you’re going to apply for a position someday, how much you’re going to get paid. There are so many questions, and answering them might just hurt your head.
Thankfully, this post aims to help you in this deliberation process. It’s like your guide, telling you all you need to know so that you can make a well-informed decision in the future. So, you must be reading this post thoroughly and taking all the information to heart. And one of these days, the things you learned now will help you make all your interior design dreams come true.
]]>Nowadays, you see products of animation everywhere. You see them as films, TV shows, video games, and many more. In fact, the growth of animation is impressive, especially for a field that only officially began not even a century ago yet.
And of course, the rise in popularity of animation comes with the rise in the number of aspiring animators out there. But pursuing education and, eventually, a career of animation is not an easy task. There are so many things to remember that it will easily get overwhelming.
However, if you’re an aspiring animator yourself, there’s no need to worry. This is the purpose of this post: to help you get the information about animation, industry trends, available careers, and the education that you’ll need.
So, here are the things that you need to know about animation, animation school, and animation careers:
Let’s first begin with the basics, and that would be what skills and innate traits that an animator should have. After all, not everyone can become an animator because animation is a challenging profession. So, if you’re really serious about pursuing a career in this field, you should have these traits and skills.
As an animator, you should be:
In addition to those traits, you should also have these skills:
If you have these traits and skills, pursuing a career in animation will be less daunting to you.
As was mentioned earlier, animation has become a very broad field, so it has a lot of areas that you can focus on. That is why as early as possible, you need to figure out where your talent lies so that you can determine which area of animation you’d like to study. Here are some of the most common areas of focus in animation:
In Fine Arts, you’ll typically learn the fundamentals. It’s here where you get to learn about colour theory, architecture, character movement, layout, composition, and lighting. aside from learning the theoretical side of things, you will also get the chance to apply everything you’ve learned into practice. In other words, in the fine arts area of animation, you will focus on the application of art theories that are a solid foundation for animation careers.
Modelling is the process of developing a mathematical representation of any surface of an object in three dimensions. As such, it is considered as the crux of animation. After all, to make a successful animated film, TV show, or video game, you need to have realistic and believable models and characters. So, if you think that you’re good at creating realistic models for a project, you can consider focusing on modelling when you study animation.
Simply put, computer animation is a process that allows you to digitally generate animated images. It is essentially the digital successor to the stop motion technique of animation, and it uses both 3D models and traditional animation techniques, particularly the frame-by-frame animation of 2D illustrations. As a result, if you focus on this area, you’ll learn both 2D and 3D animation techniques and, eventually, how to apply both in any animation project.
Special effects, often abbreviated as SFX, SPFX, or FX, are essentially just illusions or visual tricks to simulate the imagined events in a story or virtual world. In the world of animation, one of the most commonly used special effects technologies is the computer-generated imagery (CGI), which is the process of creating either static or dynamic images. But aside from CGI, which is undoubtedly popular, there are other ways to achieve special effects, and you’ll learn all about them in this area of animation.

Once you’ve finally decided on which area you want to focus on in animation school, you will delve deeper into a curriculum that will eventually help you become proficient in that said area. However, even though you’ve already chosen a specialization, that doesn’t mean that that area will be the only one you’ll get to study. You’ll also get to learn about some aspects of the other areas since your curriculum will allow you to study common subjects. Some of the common subjects that you might study include:
So, even though some of these animation courses may not be your specialization, take advantage of them nonetheless. You’ll discover in time that these classes may turn out to be influential in your own work as a future animator.
Just like any school out there, of course, the first thing that will come to mind when we think about attending an animation school is the traditional one. And by “traditional,” we mean the typical university or college setting, complete with campus and various classrooms that you can go to.
Obviously, the greatest advantage of attending an on-campus animation school is the fact that you’ll get a hands-on, experiential kind of education. In a classroom setting, you’ll learn about the theoretical aspects of animation while also engaging with the teacher and the other students. In other words, there’s an active communication going on in this scenario. And aside from the active learning, you’ll also have access to the technologies needed in your chosen area as the school definitely has them.
In other words, in an on-campus animation school, you will get to learn about animation theories as well as apply those theories into practice in the same setting. The campus is very conducive to learning all about animation.
However, even though an on-campus animation school is a great idea, not everyone has the chance to get to one. For one thing, it costs a lot to attend an on-campus animation school, and not everyone is capable of that. And for another, not everyone has a school near them to attend to. So, for some aspiring animators out there, an on-campus animation school is out of the picture.
Luckily for them, they have an alternative solution, and that is to take an online animation program. Essentially, the curriculum in an online animation program is almost similar to an on-campus program. The primary difference between the two is simply the fact that the scheduling for online animation schools is more lenient and flexible.
In an online animation school, you can complete your coursework anywhere, so long as there is an Internet connection. Sometimes even, the programs are structured in an asynchronous way, which means that you can view lectures and do assignments whenever you’re able. Basically, an online animation school is a perfect choice for those who are working students, as well as those who aren’t capable of attending an on-campus school.
But although an online animation school proves to be a great choice for a lot of people, it does have its own downsides. For one thing, you won’t have the same active learning classroom experience you’ll get from an on-campus school. Plus, you also won’t have access to the school’s technologies, so you have to either buy them for yourself or find another way.
Other than these differences, you’ll still learn the same things. So, at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter if you choose to go to an on-campus animation school or an online one. Both have their pros and cons, and you need to figure out for yourself which is the better fit for you.

So, let’s say you’re finally done with your education in animation. What now? You obviously have to look for a job to officially start your animator journey. But you’re probably scratching your head now because you don’t know what kind of jobs are available out there in the field of animation. You’re not even sure if there are actually animation jobs out there.
But don’t you worry. There is undoubtedly a demand for animators in our world right now. So, one way or the other, you’ll definitely become an animator in your own right. To help you narrow down your options, here is a list of the most in-demand job roles in animation:
Animation may be a multi-billion dollar industry right now, and it does offer a great employment scope and career opportunities for everyone. But that doesn’t mean that it’s easy to pinpoint the exact salary of animators. After all, there are a lot of factors that can influence animation salaries. The following are only some of these factors, though they are the most common ones:
Even though it’s difficult to determine the exact salary of those people working in animation, we can at least make rough estimates. It’s pretty crucial for aspiring animators to know the rough estimations of their possible salaries at the very least. After all, they want to pursue a career in this field, and understandably, they’d want to know how much they’re going to get paid.
So, if you’re curious about how much you can expect to get paid, read on. These are the rough estimates of the most common job roles in the field of animation:
Animator
Whether you’re a traditional animator who draws with pencil and paper or you’re someone who prefers 3D-generated tools, it is reported that the average annual salary that animators get is $64,000 every year. Of course, like what was mentioned earlier, this number can get lower or higher based on a number of factors. In fact, the range is a pretty wide one: some animator salaries start as low as $30,000. But they can also rise to over $100,000. In other words, salaries for animators greatly vary, depending on a lot of factors.
Generally speaking, the motion picture industry tends to pay a bit more than gaming or design. And in addition to that, animation and design offer a few more geographical areas that are attracting talents like Vancouver, Sydney, London, and New Zealand.
Art Director
Art directors are essentially those who have the creative control and whose main task is to oversee budgets and training. In other words, in animation, art directors are those who call the shots. They’re the “senior” employees, basically. And because of this and of the fact that they handle a lot of responsibilities and duties, they get a high salary. The rough estimate for art directors is around $72,000 per years.
3D Modeler
Just like the animator position, the salary of 3D modellers varies greatly as well. On average, 3D modellers take on around $68,000 a year. But the pay can get as high as $100,000 if you’re working for big-time companies like Disney.
That said, it’s been reported that many 3D modelling jobs, especially the entry-level ones, pay hourly, and the median hourly pay is around $27.
Compositing Artist
Compositing artists are those who are concerned with the finish and style of animated works. They detect and fix errors in animated works toward the end of the production process. For them, the average salary is within the range of $52,000 and $75,000 a year.
Like with most animation jobs, entertainment capitals like Los Angeles and New York tend to offer more. But remember that the markets in these cities are also competitive, so it’s really difficult to land a job in either of them.
Character riggers are those who work on the skeleton, anatomies, and geometries of 3D characters. They also manipulate how they interact with the 3D environment. Because of this responsibility, character riggers should have a lot of skills and experience that can only be learned over time. So, the salary for a character rigger who is fairly new to the industry (with about three to five years of experience) is about $46,000 a year. But as time passes by, they can expect to receive about $84,000 a year after being in the industry for six years and more.
Texture Artist
Texture artists are the ones responsible for putting fur, wrinkles, scales, and other texture details into animated objects and characters. As such, their average salary is said to be around $54,000. But it can get as low as $35,000 and as high as $95,000.
Technical Artist
Technical artists are highly sought-after, not just because of their artistic skills but also because of their technical skills that are only learned through a strong foundation and years of experience. For them, their average salary is reported to be around $67,000 a year. But in a hot market like San Francisco, it can get as high as $72,000.
Character Technical Director
A character technical director is a heavily experienced, senior role that oversees the entire scope of work on characters, creatures, and objects. Because of this, their average salary is said to be around $89,000. But in major entertainment cities, like the Los Angeles metro area, this number can get as high as $100,000.
Scientific Visualization Developer
Scientific visualization developers are the ones who use formulas and engineering to create models that can calculate the most precise movements in animation or complex processes for use in academic and high-tech fields. For this job position, you will need degrees in both math and computer animation. It sounds really demanding, but it also pays a lot: the average pay is around $93,000 a year.

]]>The application process itself is rough. This is because not only will you need to ensure your academic record is spectacular, but you’ll also need to ensure that you have the best art portfolio for application.
By now you must be wondering what an art portfolio is. Simply put, an art portfolio is essentially just an edited collection of an artist’s best artworks. And the primary purpose of this is to showcase to school administrators your style as an artist, as well as your own creativity and method of work. The portfolio is meant to let them show your potential, your strengths and weaknesses, and your growth.
For that reason, whether you’re pursuing a degree in fine art, fashion, game design, or any other kind of art, it is incredibly important to craft the best portfolio that you can. You’ll be surprised to discover that it just might be your golden ticket to a great art school.
We’ve already covered the step-by-step guide into making an art portfolio. But as of now, you still might be wondering if there are other tips you should know about. Read through these tips and apply them into your own process of creating an art portfolio.
You should know by now that you can’t create an art portfolio overnight. Rather, creating an art portfolio is an incredibly meticulous and exhaustive process, and it takes months — even years! — just to get it right. So, if you’re really setting your mind on getting to an art school, then you should start building your portfolio as early as possible.
Start thinking about which media excite you, what your strengths as an artist are, and which programs you’re interested in. Start doing this years before you’re going to apply for an art school. And in addition to your personal consideration, you should also start seeking advice from current art teachers, working artists, and anyone you know who has attended an art school.
You see, creating a portfolio should not be an effort that you have to do on your own. Sure, you’re the only one who truly knows what kind of artist you are, so you need to put the most effort in your portfolio. But if you really want your portfolio to shine through, you need to get an outside opinion so that you’ll know what to improve.
Take the initiative and ask for constructive feedback from people whose opinions you trust. This can include your art teachers, or your mentors, or even your peers. Basically, anyone who knows your art and who knows all about art, in general, will do. Their feedback will go a long way to make sure your portfolio is the best that it possibly can be.
The art and design programs in one school are going to differ greatly from the art and design programs in another. So, the type of portfolio that they want from you can also differ greatly. The great way to remedy this problem is to constantly read and reread the application guidelines of your chosen school throughout the process of art portfolio creation. Make sure you get all the criteria right down to a tee, thus saving you more problems in the future.
If some of the guidelines confuse you, then you should reach out to the faculty professors at that school and ask them questions. Don’t be afraid to do so. Professors are more than happy to accommodate your concerns, and asking them will definitely help you in the long run.
Aside from contacting the professors, you should also explore the specific styles of art that they teach and produce. This is because looking at the artworks produced by former graduates and the professors themselves is a good way of getting a good understanding of the type of work that the school fosters. Additionally, it will also help you in figuring out if you will like the program. A school may be high-ranking, but you might discover that you don’t really like the community they’re fostering. It’s better to know that beforehand so that you will be more well-informed when you’re about to apply.
Long story short, try to familiarize yourself with the art schools that you’re planning to apply to as much as you can. It’s definitely going to help you make a decision in the future.
Originality is one of the guiding principles of artists. It’s also one that art schools hold dearly. Art schools aren’t interested in seeing you copying other artists’ work, no matter how good you think you are at it. Instead, they want you to have your own exciting ideas and to be able to execute them properly.
In order to show them that you’re capable of this, you need to have artworks in your portfolio that are original. You need to put artworks that are unique, that undoubtedly shows your novel and inventive thinking. This means that fan art and celebrity portraits should be avoided because these won’t help distinguish your work from the crowd.
Another way to show off your originality is to create subjects that are personal and engaging for you. Aside from being representative of your strengths as an artist, an art portfolio should also show off your personality as a whole. The school administrators should be able to see what excites and interests you. If you have artworks that show just that, then your portfolio will definitely stand out from the crowd.
As was mentioned earlier, every art school is different, so every school will value particular elements of your portfolio over others. But don’t take this to mean that they won’t be impressed and excited by something that is completely unexpected.
So, try to experiment with some of your projects. You don’t have to get it right the first time around. If you don’t like how a certain project turned out, you can always do it again later. Just focus on the experimentation, on trying out new things. It will make for a fun artistic experience, and it will help you grow as an artist.
This should go without saying, but just in case you’ve forgotten, the artworks in your portfolio should show off your strengths. And even better, you should show off a variety of them. Put artworks that are diverse in terms of approach, media, and content, and you’ll surely catch the eye of the art school administrators.
In a way, think of your portfolio as an art gallery of sorts. The artworks that you’ve chosen should stand as unique beats in the story you’re telling about your work. They should build upon one another to give the viewers — in this scenario, the administrators — a sense of your range of abilities and interests.
However, just because it’s a good idea to submit a diverse portfolio doesn’t mean you need to compromise the quality for the sake of diversity. After all, not every artist is an expert in every category. So, you shouldn’t have to feel the pressure to submit a sub-par work just to make your portfolio look multidisciplinary. As much as possible, try to focus on the aspects that you’re good at.
This is a little tricky because sometimes, art schools won’t allow you to put in unfinished artworks. But if the school you’re applying to allows it, then consider putting in works-in-progress into your portfolio.
This is because some art schools believe that being able to see your creative process as it began can speak volumes about what kind of artist you are. They like to see the step-by-step process of how a final project came to be and what the artist learned along the way. And the good way for you to be able to let them see that is to add in some of your unfinished works.
Of course, if you choose to add in works-in-progress, you should also be smart on which ones to pick. You should make sure that your unfinished works should add something to your portfolio. You shouldn’t just put them there for the sake of bulking up your submission.
So, look at your unfinished works. Which ones do you think show the most potential, the most strength, and the most growth? Those should be the ones that you put into your portfolio.
So, you’ve already gathered a wide selection of your artworks that you consider as your best and your most original. What now? Well, now you have to actually narrow them down on which ones to include and how to properly arrange them.
Think of your portfolio as an essay of sorts. In order for it to successfully disseminate the ideas that you’re discussing, an essay has to be readable and concise. There shouldn’t be any unnecessary fillers just to bulk it up. The same thing should be said for the art portfolio. Every artwork inside should be strong — they all should showcase your abilities as an artist. There shouldn’t be one that’s considered the weakest link of the group.
Additionally, you should also think about how you want to arrange these works. The arrangement is totally up to you, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t think about it carefully. Do you want to go for a chronological order where your portfolio starts with your earliest artworks then ends with your most recent one? Or do you want to arrange them by theme or style or approach? Think of what you want to say with your portfolio, then base your arrangement from that.
The portfolio curation is probably the part of the art portfolio creation process that takes up the longest time. But don’t let that worry you. Instead, take advantage of it. Take your sweet time and deliberate very carefully on which works to include and how to arrange them. And if you ever feel lost, remember to ask feedback from other people. You’ll need all the help you can get.
So, you’ve successfully figured out which artworks you want to feature and how you want to arrange them. Now, you have to face another problem: how to properly document them.
The artworks that you’ll be passing into your portfolio aren’t going to be the original copies. After all, you must be submitting to multiple art schools, and of course, you want to keep your originals. So, when it comes to creating a portfolio, you need to duplicate them. You can either do this through photocopies or scans or through pictures.
Whichever route you choose, you need to make sure that the quality of the duplicates is great. The last thing you’ll need is to jeopardize your chances of getting into a great art school because the copies in your portfolio are blurry.
So, do your research and find a way to document your artworks in a high-quality way. Some may opt for professional photography, but that is too expensive for others. Meanwhile, others might opt to go for a video instead. Whatever you choose, it’s totally up to you. Just make sure that the quality is as great as the original copy.
By now you must be feeling overwhelmed with all these tips that you’re having a hard time remembering them. Don’t worry — you can just choose to attend National Portfolio Day, and everything will be right on track again.
If you’re unaware, National Portfolio Day is essentially just an event tailored specifically for visual artists and designers. This is where aspiring artists who wish to pursue an education in arts get the chance to meet with representatives from art schools all over the country who will then review their portfolios.
In other words, this is where artists will get a glimpse of how their portfolios will be received by art schools. And this is something you should take advantage of because it’s during this event you’ll know what actually works in your portfolio and what needs to be improved.
So, consider attending National Portfolio Day. And if you do choose to go, you should also prepare yourself for brutally honest comments. It can be jarring at first to hear brutally honest criticism but don’t take it too personally. Instead, apply those comments into your process of making the portfolio even better than before.
To increase your chances of getting into a great art school, you have to make sure that you’ve met all the criteria. But another thing that you should also consider when you’re in the art portfolio creation process is to ask yourself one question. And that is: “Does my portfolio truly represent why I want to make art?”
Because you’re so focused on meeting the criteria during this process, it’s easy to feel like you’re only making art to impress the admissions team. So, when you start to feel this way, try to remember what attracted you to art in the first place and if you think attending an art school will foster that.
In other words, you have to make sure that you know why you want to go to an art school before you send in your application. And this is something that you can’t ask for feedback from other people. This is something you have to figure out by yourself.
The tips mentioned above actually mentioned the kinds of artwork that you need to put in an art portfolio. But they might be easy to forget since they’re mentioned all over the place. That is the purpose of this section: to give a refresher course of all the important things you need to put into your portfolio. They are as follows:
Originality is a big deal for art schools. So make sure your artworks are “original,” meaning you created them from pure passion and direct observation. These original artworks should show the administrators what interests you and what your personality is like.
Avoid at all times putting in fan arts or portraits of celebrities and the like. Aside from the fact that those won’t let you stand out from the crowd, they are also dull to look at.
Is there a particular theme that you’re passionate about — for example, religion? Or are you good at a particular kind of artwork, like self-portraits? Great! Include them. It’s always a good idea to put in artworks that show off your strength.
However, avoid making your portfolio simply all about them. Try mixing things up a bit. There must be other subject matters that interest you. Put them in as well. If your portfolio is all filled with artworks that have the same theme, the administrators will get boring real fast.
So, diversify your subject matters and your themes. Doing this will give the impression that you’re curious and willing to take up any subject matter. It shows that you’re not narrow-minded. And that is something that art school administrators are looking for in artists.
This is very much in the same vein as the previous tip. Basically, the idea is, in addition to diversifying your portfolio’s subject matter, it’s also a great idea to diversify your chosen medium.
For example, let’s say that your strength is graphic design. Understandably, you’ll want to make your portfolio all about graphic design. However, it’s highly recommended to put in other artworks that aren’t graphic design. Throw in some original paintings in there, or sculptures, drawings, and the like. Basically, just show off what other artistic things you can do besides your one true artistic passion.
Diversifying your chosen medium is great for the same reason as the previous tip. It shows that you have more than one skill set and that you can easily move from one medium to the next with no problem at all. It shows your versatility as an artist, and versatility is incredibly impressive.
Your art portfolio isn’t just there to show off your technical skills to the school administrators. It is also there to show off your personal ideas and expression. Administrators will want to see you express an opinion, a narrative, an emotion, a mood, even a political statement if you want, in your artworks.
In other words, they want your artworks to be more than just visual eye candy. They also want to be able to see that you’re trying to communicate with your artworks and that what you’re trying to communicate clearly seeps through.
This is a no-brainer. Of course, the artworks that you put in are the ones that have been 100% fully realized. This means there should be no white backgrounds, no dirty fingerprints, no ripped edges, etc., on your artwork copies in your portfolio. They all should be as clean and as perfect as they possibly can be.
However, as was mentioned before, there is an exception for this tip. It’s true that most art schools will require only finished products. But there are others that will allow you to put in unfinished ones as well. If the school you’re applying to is one of them, take advantage of it. Include at least or two images from your sketchbook. This is because unfinished artworks allow the administrators to see your thinking, brainstorming, and sketching process. And seeing the process is important for some because it really shows a deeper side of your artistic skill.
So, throw in a few unfinished pieces. But remember: you only need to put in a few. One or two images will do. Don’t go overboard with that.
A lot of art professors will tell you that accomplished drawings are the heart of a successful portfolio. It doesn’t matter what specialization you have — strong drawings are required nevertheless.
The reason why hand-sketched drawings are essential in portfolios is primarily technical. Drawings allow the administrators to see how you are able to record shape and form, detail, perspective, proportion, and surface quality. In other words, drawings are where you get to showcase your basic understanding of the fundamentals of art. And though we have mentioned how passion and personality are important in your portfolio, the technical side of things is important as well.
Of course, the pieces that you’re putting into your portfolio aren’t the original copies. They’re simply duplicates. After all, you’ll be applying to multiple art schools, so you’ll need a lot of copies. Plus, you’ll definitely want to keep the original copies for yourself.
So, you’ll have to reproduce your artworks — how you do it is entirely up to you. Some people simply photocopy, others choose to hire a professional photographer, while others rely on scanning. Some might even just choose to use their smartphones. There is no wrong way to duplicate your artworks.
But there is something that you should keep in mind: make sure that the duplicate copies are of high-quality. After all, the last thing you’ll want is to jeopardize your chances of getting into your preferred art school because your artwork images are blurry.
In the year 2019, more and more people are applying to art schools. On the one hand, this is great news because it means art becomes even more prevalent day by day. But on the other hand, it is also bad news, especially for you, because now you have more competition. If you really want to get in, you have to stand out from the crowd. And to be able to do that, you need to have a perfect art portfolio.
The tips mentioned in this post are meant to help you in your process of creating your very own portfolio. Read them carefully and take them as you will. Apply them to your own process, and hopefully, you’ll get into the art school of your dreams.
